Meet Josh Goldstein of In The Variant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Goldstein.

Hi Josh, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey, thank you so much for having me! I get to play music with a couple of my good friends in our band IN THE VARIANT.

Josh Somers and I met about 10 years ago working together at Best Buy. We started playing music together at his apartment down off of Colfax by The Lost Lake Lounge. About a year or so later we met Jason Deliganis, our drummer, and Jeremy, a vocalist who sang with us for a bit. Since then, we cut our teeth all over Colorado. Even touring out to SXSW in Texas a few years back. We’ve made some high-budget music video and put out a few EPs. During all this time we’ve all gotten married, had kids, changes careers, but throughout all of that, the music was a constant. No matter what is going on in each of our lives we always come together at our practice space off of South Broadway in Denver. It has always been a space where we can transmute everything that we go through. It’s been a source of stability through everything. Especially this COVID stuff!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely NOT smooth haha! It’s all been a learning experience though. Moments are smooth but more often than not we’ve had to bend. I think the biggest challenge (other than COVID and live music) had always been remembering why we do it. It is a struggle. Especially when you’ve worked a 59-hour week and have to go to practice to bang out an hour-long setlist and work on new tunes. But it’s all worth it. It’s worth coming home battered and bruised after all that and feeling like you accomplished SOMETHING today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We play music. We try and push ourselves outside our comfort zones when we write. That’s what the name is all about. About being varied. About being IN that space of variance. We try and combine metal, psychedelic, hip hop, electronic, and many other types of music to create something unique. We are absolutely known for our live shows. We tend to constantly jam our tunes and play things differently a lot. When you come to see ITV, you may never hear the exact same song twice haha! STAY VARIED!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is probably spending days from sunup to sundown not worrying about anything. Just living, playing, running, swimming, eating. Not a care in the world. That’s one of the things music does for me. It takes me back there. I ALSO remember the feeling of not having to pay rent. That’s a good one too!
