Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Morrison.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey began in my home state of Iowa. While attending the University of Iowa for nursing, I offered haircuts in the dormitories to earn income. This slowly directed me to consider cosmetology as a career. My aunt, here in Denver, invited me to explore the Aveda Institute and I quickly fell in love with the Institute’s philosophy. I was passionate about learning everything I could about hair, beauty, self-esteem, and how to manage all things hair into a business. I developed skills that continue to shape me as a cosmetologist. Starting out was difficult, establishing a clientele, developing trust, and forming those relationships required a lot of follow-up, marketing, and good communication skills.
It was important for me to learn the culture, the vibe of Denver. I worked in several salons before landing where I am today downtown. Once I honed my skills, I taught at the Aveda Institute in Denver. It was important for me to give back to my community and share what I had learned along the way. With all my transitions, my clientele stayed with me. For me, change is the purest form of inspiration and my customers have given me that inspiration.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many challenges and social media is an entity with many footholds. It is important to establish that presence. My website gives me the ability to market myself in a way that shows my creativity and professionalism. I have also had to set boundaries and recognize this is a healthy part of maintaining a balance between professional and personal well-being. Success in my business is providing a service to a group of people I relate to in a compassionate uplifting way. Not only do I help groom them, but I also provide them with a sense of self-worth through empathetic listening and dialogue while maintaining a mutually supportive relationship.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
It is important to stay current with the trends in cosmetology. I am known for movement in naturally curly textures while producing a minimalistic style. I enjoy collaborating with each client on the cut, color enhancement, and styling techniques so they walk away with a manageable style they will love. My favorite service and recent addition to my offerings is hair extensions using the Hidden Row Method. I had the privilege to meet and train under the creator of this technique here in Denver. This method provides length and volume while protecting the hair’s integrity.
Complacency has no place in a successful business. I continue to learn and grow in my professional and personal life. My career has spanned ten years here in Denver. I met some wonderful people along the way and so many who have helped bridge those gaps for me. My integrity and work ethic continue to reward me. I am a respected member of the fashion community here in Denver and had the pleasure of attending our Fashion Week shows as a preferred hairstylist. My clients continue to refer me to friends and family. It is the loyalty in those relationships that continue to grow and cultivate a thriving practice. I continue to push myself every day. I manage my own schedule in addition to providing services. Managing a small business through the pandemic has brought additional challenges, but perseverance and staying authentic to who I am were two-character traits that served me well.
How do you define success?
Success can mean many different things depending on the context. For me, success in business is a blend of one’s personal belief system and life journey. Goals certainly play into that, being open to self-growth, and staying positive. To be successful requires core values such as loyalty, honesty, trust, perseverance, dependability, follow-through, communication, and a good work ethic. Relationships are at the cornerstone of those values. Everything I do revolves around maintaining relationships. In order to sustain relationships, you need consistency and hard work whether these are with customers, family, or friends. It is important to cultivate these relationships even when the person is not in my presence. Staying connected means having the elements link together and that in turn perpetuates a thriving work-life balance and business.
