Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhett Buckley.
Hi Rhett, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My wife and I met in law school in Topeka, Kansas. While she is a proud Denver native, I grew up in Kansas City. After a short conversation, I agreed to follow her back to the Mile High City. We both passed the Colorado Bar on our first attempts in 2013. Jenn has spent the vast majority of her legal career working exclusively in the personal injury field. She has worked for several major personal injury firms in the Denver Metropolitan area, including Frank Azar and Sawaya. Meanwhile, I worked for a variety of smaller firms that specialized in litigation related to construction, general business practice, and oil & gas. Eventually, we decided to open Buckley Simpson Law LLC in October of 2020. The firm specializes in personal injury as the majority of our practice. However, we also work on business law, some criminal defense, and contract drafting. We live in Southwest Denver with our daughter, dog, and cat.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When Jenn and I first moved back to Colorado, the state bar required every new attorney to take a day-long ethics class. During that class, the President of the Colorado Bar Association told the group that the fastest growing section of the bar at that time was attorneys sixty years and older who were coming out of retirement to work. That is quite a scary thing to hear when you are a recent graduate with law school debt and you are being told that you will have to compete for entry-level positions against people with decades more experience than yourself. I was lucky enough to already be working for an oil and gas broker at the time that we moved, but it took months for us both to find local jobs. Especially with legal jobs, most entry-level positions seemed to require years of experience. Looking back on it now, I know that the struggles that Jenn and I faced are still present for many new graduates.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Buckley Simpson Law LLC?
We are a local family-owned and operated business. Being married and running a business together is, as my aunt once told me, very brave or very stupid. One of the major reasons we opened Buckley Simpson Law is because we believe that legal services should be personal and provide a level of quality that matches the costs of those services. I grew up in a family of attorneys back in Kansas City and something that I always noticed was the compassionate nature of any successful attorney when interacting with their clients. Often people are entrusting Jenn and I with personal problems or goals that are critically important and which have serious consequences if treated improperly or impersonally. We try and meet in person with any potential client before anything is every signed or charged. We insist on meeting in person because we like to have any client actually know who their attorney will be and who will be handling their case. The cases that we handle at Buckley Simpson Law are all handled directly by both my wife and I. Clients are never shuffled off to an assistant or receptionist. If clients are putting their trust in us to handle their cases, then we strive to provide them with personal and quality legal representation.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happy clients always make Jenn and I happy. But outside of the law firm, both Jenn and I have a variety of hobbies that help keep us sane. Jenn is an aspiring baker, who is always working to perfect her macaroon recipes. I love to go camping and hiking. We are also full-time parents, and while that can mean a lot of work, nothing brings us as much joy and happiness as our daughter.
