Today we’d like to introduce you to Delicia Jackson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a disabled veteran, and I needed to do something else to make ends meet. With my disabilities, it had me down for a while, but having faith in God and a good friend to listen helped me overcome some of my struggles.
I was in the military for seven years. I suffer from severe PTSD from the war in Iraq. I had more close calls that I care to mention, and the memories from that year are all I dream about. So not only did I have physical struggles, but my mental health was shaky, too. I lost my mom in 2019 and my dad less than a year later. They were my world, and I struggled to have enough energy and motivation to move forward, so that’s when I decided to start a business. I needed something to get my mind on something productive. Keeping my mind and my hands occupied has been what really motivated my work.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am learning how to run a business as I go, and have lost money along the way through different trial and errors. I had a setback after a social media scam, which made me lose trust in putting my work online. This makes it difficult to start an e-commerce business if I’m not available on social media, so I’m slowly starting to gain trust again. The momentum is coming back after many setbacks, but I’m not going to give up. It’s not who I am. I worked with a friend to revamp my website. I started an Etsy shop. We’re going to make a marketing video highlighting girls who love their style and their hair. My work is becoming fun again, and I’m enjoying putting myself and my work out to the world more and more. I love the idea that my scrunchies have the power to lift up girls and women to love themselves and their unique hairstyles.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am really proud of my scrunchies – I love the thick, heavy elastic and it stretches to fit every hairstyle. When I see the smiles on my daughters’ faces – when I make something for them that is special just for them – the fabric, the love put into making it just right – they just love it! It makes me want to offer quality, handmade pieces to more people. Especially if they’re having trouble finding ways to do their hair or show their style with traditional, small hair bands. It’s just such a simple thing that can make a big difference for a girls’ self-esteem and happiness if she has a scrunchie that works for her hair.
