Today we’d like to introduce you to Cass Clayton.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started singing and playing music 8 years ago and quickly realized I needed to write my own lyrics to stay passionate about the process. After that, things started moving really fast. We released a full-length album and didn’t really take a break before going immediately into writing the next record. It’s been a lot of fun in the studio and I feel really lucky to be making music with our co-writer and producer, Taylor Scott. He’s highly creative and has brilliant composing and arranging skills. Our 3rd record will be coming out this year, and I’m super excited about the new music.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Choosing a creative path is a wild ride because we’re literally making things up as we go. The music industry has a lot of cracks in it, so I’ve found that most musicians are doing this because it’s a calling and they love it enough to make things work. It’s a little cliche’, but sometimes great art comes out of difficulty. The last two years were creatively charged.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer, and I suppose I’m best known for my voice and for writing lyrics. Taylor Scott is a great band leader and makes sure we’re always evolving in the right direction, despite the fact that he has his own band as well. We have a non-denominational approach to music with influences from funk, soul, rock, and singer/songwriter genres. Over time, our own sound has developed but none of us is interested in being typecast. If we write a song that wants to be country or blues or whatever, we’ll follow the breadcrumbs until the song seems right.
Every musician approaches songwriting a little differently. It’s a bit like a fingerprint, and my personal approach is to quiet my mind and see what comes through. I meditate a lot, and I try to stay out of the way in terms of controlling things on a mental level. My best and happiest moments are when that works. The worst times are when I’m trying really hard to write a song.
To answer your question about what I’m most proud of, I generally try to keep pride out of the process because it messes me up. I like being grateful for the songs that come through, the amazing musicians I get to play with, and doing what I love.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I would say the most important thing to me is my inner world. I’m dedicated to my own inner peace because I want to have something real to give to the world.
