Conversations with Willis Grey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Willis Grey.

Hi Willis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It started way off deep in the darkest part of my ego. There the fire was ignited for all things rhythm and soul. At an early age, I learned how to play the trumpet, the keys, and the bass guitar. I come from a family with a vast musical background, everyone in my household played an instrument. Home was where my skills were honed and where my pen was refined. Home is where I learned how to channel my emotions through my voice. Thus, my love for music was born. I am a singer/songwriter and musician and the co-founding member of Camp Grey, which is a “hive mind” collective of creatives; Individuals possessing skills and talents in the fields of art, fashion, and entertainment. Today with the continued support of my friends and loved ones I am able to continue doing what I love in creating beautiful pieces of art to share with the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many challenges along my journey. As we all know the entertainment world and more specifically the music business is saturated with politics and shady business practices. Teams fold, partnerships come and go, and the barometer by which we measure success changes as often as the opinions of those judging our craft. My struggles have provided me the necessary lessons needed to continue to learn and grow into the person and artist I hope to become.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an artist. A singer and writer at heart. When I first got into music, I started songwriting for my peers and members of the music community. Would play bass guitar for friends at their gigs and even played in church for several years. At some point along the way, I was encouraged to start performing my own works and here we are today. My music is an acquired taste, I say with a smile. I’m not the traditional archetype R&B singer, I look to push the boundaries of genres and avoid the idea of being categorized. I believe this is what sets me apart. I create from ego, from love, experience, and pain, from all the pieces inside that makes us who we are as individuals. I try to relate and be relatable, without following the trends of this cookie-cutter, manufactured sound of today. My independence is what I’m most proud of.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Those hot humid Illinois summers. Running through the streets of my hometown with my brothers and my cousins. In and out of Grandpa’s house, some of my fondest memories.
