Daily Inspiration: Meet Loretta Chosa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Loretta Chosa.

Hi Loretta, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started playing in makeup 4 years ago when I moved to Colorado from Minnesota. It started as something to do while I was home because I didn’t know anyone here and I didn’t want to pay someone to do my makeup for my wedding. Which I ended up having someone do my makeup anyway because the day was too stressful. It has turned into to my way of decompressing after a long day, a way to do some much-needed self-care after being an employee, a mom, and a wife all day. I started out only knowing how to do eyeliner and just barely at that. Every single time I do makeup now I always try to push myself to try something new, something different, something I haven’t done before. I started putting my looks on Facebook and Instagram hoping maybe that would be the push I needed to really get out of my comfort zone. I started following more creators who did the makeup I always wish I could do. Stepping into this online makeup community has introduced me to some amazing people, some not-so-amazing people, and presented opportunities I never thought I would have. This has become more than just a hobby, now It’s a passion. I keep pushing every day in hopes that maybe someday something will come of this whether it’s a career or more opportunities more opportunities. I don’t see many Indigenous creators in the Makeup community and I love having the chance to be part of this small margin within such a huge community.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There’s been a lot of learning involved. People think that it is just sitting down and throwing makeup on your face but there’s an art to it. Learning how to do all the different techniques and stepping out of your comfort zone to learn something you never thought you’d be able to do able to do. I go through a lot of creative blocks where I can’t think of something new to do that isn’t what everyone else is already doing. It’s really hard to be noticed because the Makeup community is such a huge community. I’m constantly trying to find something different, to set me apart from the next person. There have been times that I don’t post for a month because I just can’t think of what to do next. And there’s times where the looks just don’t turn out the way that you want them to. I try to take my time away and come back with something fresh.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work for a company call Affinity Fundraising Registration. We help nonprofits file in compliance to fundraiser with confidence. We help navigate the complicated registration process so charities can raise funds legally in any state. This is a new line of work for me. I started with this company last year and it has been a great change.

Previously a was the Agency Manager for a Native American Operated Home Care Agency for 7 years. Both career paths have been very fulfilling in their own ways.

I am most proud of my own determination. No matter what line of work I’m in, I work hard, I put my all into everything that I do, and I try to be as successful as humanly possible. To me being successful is it necessary the dollar signs, it’s doing work that feels important. Work that helps someone. That’s what’s most important to me and I feel like both my career pass that I’ve been on have done just that.

I love being in a role that helps the community in some way.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to just keep trying. It’s very hard for me to fail in any way. I try really hard to always get things right the 1st time, and sometimes that’s not the right way to do things. We have to make mistakes in order to grow, to change, to get to where we need to be. I’ve learned that some of the most exciting work can come from a mistake. Even though I made a mistake, because I keep trying, beautiful creations can come from it. That is something I try to teach my kids now. Keep trying no matter what.
