Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesus Vasquez Jr.
Hi Jesus, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Growing up in a rough area (south-central LA) I used to get bullied which eventually led into fights at school and around my block. I got beat up in front of what felt like the entire school. I cried to my dad that I wanted to take karate classes to learn how to be better prepared to defend myself the next time this occurs. He agreed to take me if I promised to only use my karate in case of an emergency and not to get revenge. In karate, I would actually punch/hit the kids for real so the sensei recommended to my dad that I try boxing saying “he would be good”. As soon as my dad took me to a real boxing gym, I immediately fell in love with it. I grew up watching Jean Claude van damme movies like “kickboxer” and “blood sport” so I was infatuated with the combat sports life. I always dreamed of one day becoming a fighter. That’s pretty much where it all started. Boxing taught me since an early age about working hard for a goal/reward. I learned the importance of discipline. I wanted it so bad that I would do anything to become who I wanted to be, professional. I would stop at nothing less. Accomplishing 150+ amateur fights, placing 3rd at the Olympic trials and 4 national championships.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I encountered many obstacles along the way, lost fights, fractioned many bones, lost my loved Uncle who was a father figure, not making the Olympics, and eventually retirement. After being away from the sport, my daughter was born & it gave me new motivation, it was no longer about me. I made comeback to the sport and accomplished my childhood dream of becoming a professional in boxing.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently a professional boxer with a record of 10-1 climbing up the ranks on a quest to become world champion. I’m known for standing out in the boxing world. Anyone who doesn’t know me would think I’m a reggaetón artist but never a boxer. I’m very artistic, I dress like a rockstar, and I’m unpredictable. I’m like the Dennis Rodman of boxing. I most proud of my national titles. As an amateur fighting in tournaments up to 5-6 times a week to win a national title against some of the best fighters in the nation. It’s extremely hard, so hard that some fighters turn professional & never win one. I think what sets me apart from other, is I’ve always been in my own lane since I was young, I never followed the crowd or my friends to do bad things. I guess I always knew where I was going.
What was you like growing up?
Growing up. Boxing Changed me. It humbled me and I stopped getting into fights. I made sure no one knew I was a boxer until they had to know. I was very mysterious, and artistic, loved fashion and sneakers although I didn’t have the money to get any of them, but I still managed to always look fresh with what I had. I also loved skateboarding and photography I would use skating/photography to get my mind away from the gym and school. I also thought I had a game with the ladies back them smh.
