Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuliya Rabinovich.
Hi Yuliya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have my family to thank for guidance to become a dentist, the drive to become a whole body-centered dentist, and the necessity to become an airway-focused dentist. My mom was a dentist in Eastern Europe. I grew up associating my mom with the scent of clove oil, a natural anesthetic, and still, get a warm and fuzzy feeling when catching a hint of it in dental products.
When deciding what career path to take, dentistry was a natural choice. My mom never pushed but broke it down this way: you’re good with your hands and like helping people, so how about dentistry? My holistic approach to dental care came from watching my mom struggle with health issues to which no one seemed to have answers. Realize that a human body is an intricate web of cause and effect where the cause may not be where one might expect to find it. It’s the same reason I started learning more about the airway.
My oldest daughter had health issues that I later learned were related to her mouth and her airway. What an eye-opening learning experience it was for this mom dentist! I’m very passionate about helping people achieve more excellent health that starts with their mouths. I am determined to change people’s perspectives about what a dentist can help them with…. one tooth and airway at a time. I’ve worked as an associate dentist in many offices over the years. From some, you learn how to do things right. From others, you know what not to do. Then you figure out how you want to put that excellent knowledge to work and make it patient-centered. Not business-centered, not dental insurance centered, not latest fad centered, but specifically patient needs and desires centered. I nursed that idea until it was ready to be born, and Dental Muse was created when we discovered Castle Pines and fell in love with the area.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
The biggest struggle has been opening my brand new start-up practice just a few months before COVID19 hit, and we were placed under quarantine. Except for emergency dental services, dentists were instructed to close down due to fear of spreading the virus through aerosols since most of what we do produces aerosols. So there I was, opening a brand new business, with no loyal following of patients yet, hundreds of dollars in business loan debt, and no budget to sustain any of it.
Since necessity often leads to innovation, it forces one to think outside the box. We were all scared and anxious about this new virus we knew little about. I needed to figure out how to make my office safe for patients and my team. The answer came from Surgically Clean Air Purifiers, medical-grade air scrubbers that use a multi-level air purification system in record time that we still use today. I was also seemingly the only dentist offering emergency services in the area because I had the foresight to order all the necessary PPE before the panic and shortages began. So I could provide emergency dental care to patients safely which would otherwise be in pain, swollen and scared to go to the ER. Little by little, we became known as an office dedicated to patients’ health and safety.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us more about your work?
I’m a whole body-centered dentist. For many years, dentists were viewed as no more than tooth mechanics. Unfortunately, some still feel that way even today. Many don’t realize how great of an impact the mouth has on the health of the rest of the body and vice versa. It shouldn’t be just reactive dentistry, meaning someone comes in with a cavity. We drill it, fill it, and send a patient on their way. We treat cavities but as a symptom of a problem, not as a problem itself. It’s about figuring out what led to the problem in the first place and how we prevent it from happening again. We want to be proactive in treatment, not just reactive.
Many people take excellent care of their teeth yet discover they have cavities at every dental check-up. Others continue breaking teeth even after they are fixed. That’s very frustrating AND expensive. By taking very detailed medical, dental, and social history, we can frequently get to the root cause of dental issues because it’s not always a lack of flossing or a sweet tooth that wreaks havoc. Many systemic problems show up in the mouth, and it’s essential to recognize that because many people see their dentist more than they do their primary care physician. That’s why all healthcare professionals must work together and not be blinded by the narrow view of our specialties. We enjoy many benefits of modern technology, but much of it comes at the price of our health. At Dental Muse, we seek out the most natural materials whenever possible, or the least toxic when natural is not the best option in terms of longevity or strength. For example, we use Silver Nitrate (fluoride-free version of better known Silver Diamine Fluoride) as a conservative approach to treating cavities.
This material, that’s been in use for decades in Japan and other parts of the world, allows us to arrest cavities in minimal patients who might be too young to sit through conventional methods of cavity excavation. We also seek out BPA-free and BPA precursor-free composite resin, or the white filling material as most people know it. However, the most significant impact on how I practice dentistry comes from research that connects sleep and airway to dental arches.
Going back to seeking the root cause of problems, the small jaws have probably the most impact. We save patients a lifetime of pain and discomfort by addressing the root cause of fractured, worn down, sensitive teeth, teeth grinding, headaches, and poor sleep. Still, we can also improve breathing, sleeping, and overall quality of life.
I’m most proud of the brand for its authenticity. Everyone on the Dental Muse Team aims to help in the most transparent, caring, and genuine manner. All of us are natural caretakers, which is easy to see when you step into our office. We get most new patients from local events when people get to meet us in person and feel our warmth for themselves. We also realize that the most challenging part is showing up to that dental appointment, so we never judge or scold; we’re just happy to see you!
Every new patient gets a comprehensive exam using the latest technology. We evaluate dental health, periodontal health, TMJ function, tooth alignment, and airway. We discuss lifestyle and any necessary habit changes, but mostly we listen. It’s no surprise to us that we get to learn from patients themselves how to best help them by just listening to them. We offer the Dental Muse VIP plan, an in-house savings plan for patients without dental insurance. Every reader of Voyage Denver will receive a complimentary whitening kit with their initial visit for an exam and teeth cleaning.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We moved to Colorado from New York, the New York City, to be precisely where every hole-in-the-wall restaurant offers great tasting food. In Colorado, we find tasty food is more of a gem to be discovered which is what we love most about this state, how much there is to learn.
This state has everything anyone can ever want, except the beach, we do miss that, but the hikes, the nature, the climate, and the views places Colorado above most other states!
