Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashely Merrill.
Hi Ashely, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I worked in the animal care field for many years, during and after college. I love animals and truly enjoyed working with them every day. Eventually, the emotional hardships of this job took its toll on me, and I started to suffer and lose my enjoyment of the field. During this time, my boyfriend and I moved around a lot and would always buy and sell our furniture. At one point, I decided to refinish an old bench that we had acquired along the way and that’s how our first business began! We started repurposing and refinishing old and otherwise “useless” pieces of furniture and over time the hobby became a way to make money. I really was shocked at first that people would buy a piece of furniture that I upcycled. I had no real experience, but we just went with it and worked really hard and didn’t give up! It was my first experience being an entrepreneur and I was quickly hooked. The business has changed and grown a lot over the last couple of years.
I am so proud of what we created and will always be grateful for everything that it has taught me. After spending a year growing our furniture business, I started to learn more about myself and realized that I was ready for another challenge. I have always been passionate about real estate and many times wanted to make it a career. It encompasses my love for helping people, love for homes/design, and love for running my own business. I decided to take the plunge and get my real estate license. Today, I am working as a full-time real estate agent. My focus is helping people navigate their journey whether they are buying or selling a home. People have deep connections with their homes, and I really strive to honor that.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been many setbacks along the way! Truthfully, most days are still a struggle. Things often don’t work out as originally planned and I think accepting that and learning to move on from setbacks as quickly as possible has helped me a lot. At the beginning of this journey, I focused a lot on things that went wrong, and I would become extremely overwhelmed at each setback no matter how big or small. Although this is still a struggle for me, I have tried to focus on what I can learn or take away from each “mistake” or “failure”. One of my favorite daily mantras is the quote “Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit”- Napoleon Hill.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My newest adventure is working as a Realtor for Brick & Main Real Estate serving the Denver metro and surrounding areas. I am very proud of where I am today and excited to see what the future holds! I love meeting new people and figuring out ways that I can help them in their real estate journey. Running my own business over the last year has made me an extremely hard worker and taught me so much. I truly care about my clients’ needs and find fulfillment in helping others.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The two most important lessons that I’ve learned along my journey are to practice positive thinking and to step outside of my comfort zone. I have struggled with self-doubt and negative self-talk a lot and it is something that I am constantly trying to overcome. I have learned that your thoughts are extremely powerful, and they do have the ability to control your life. Having a positive internal dialect has helped me gain confidence in myself and allows me to take more risks and step outside of my comfort zone. The more you practice living outside of your comfort zone, the easier it becomes. You will surprise yourself with what you can do. There are no limits.
