Conversations with Grayson Schrom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grayson Schrom.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I got to Denver about five years ago to kind of reset my life in a way. I love it here and although it was hard at first, I really was able to finally be stability after many years of being ungrounded. In the back of my mind, I always wanted to do comedy in some form or fashion, through writing, performing, or just being involved. I was drawn to the scene in Denver which is getting better and better every day and the community is amazing. Growing in an artistic form has been a lifesaver and allowed me to express myself in a way I never really could at work or in other parts of my life. I am so happy to be here.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Certainly not. My family and myself have suffered quite a bit from the loss of family members, divorce, and cancer. I personally had a very rough high school experience, being so young I wanted to fit in so badly and ultimately led to drug use and abuse. By some sort of miracle, I was able to get into college, where I was more broke than I had ever been. Even getting out to Denver was hard, it was a lot of stress and pain. The road was pretty rough up until a few years ago, but I wouldn’t change this path. I had fun, I had pain, but it was all worth it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
By day I work as an operations specialist at a local self-storage company. I deal with customers and collections people that really have some struggles. At night though, I am an aspiring stand-up comedian. I tell jokes at Dive Bars with other misfits that try to express their struggles and life through comedy and making people laugh. It’s such an interesting pursuit. There are nights that I would rather forget and some I will always remember. I’ve loved it and hated it, but I know that this is the pursuit I want to take on. I’ve tried so many different things in my life, but Comedy seems to be the one that speaks to me most, the one passion worth taking on. So I’m not looking back. I’ve had many moments to be proud of both in my day job and through comedy.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up and being the youngest of three boys, I always wanted to be in the spotlight. I followed my brothers into every activity that they picked up, Skateboarding, Swimming, Lacrosse, anything my brothers did, I wanted to do as well. In school, I was the class clown, never doing great grade-wise but loving the attention of cracking a joke in class or doing some impression. As I got into high school, I got a lot more quiet, the social pressure of always trying to look cool and have a lot of friends was something that I was in pursuit of for some reason or another. As I went into college, I finally found myself, my voice, and a friend group that I cared for.
