Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Woods.
Hi Jade, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was younger, my mom sparked my interest in true crime by watching ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ and similar shows. A few years ago, my sister and I started making candles as a hobby and gave away 100+ as gifts over time. When candle making, we often played our favorite true crime podcasts and an idea was born: candles and crime. We slowly built our candle business, Weird Wax Co, over the course of two years while dealing with various life changes and managing the careers we studied for. A few months after we opened, I left my paralegal position at a prestigious law firm to pursue this dream. Today we have been in business for under a year and have been steadily growing since.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been long and bumpy but I’ve learned a great deal and developed new skills along the way. The biggest struggle has been learning everything informally as I go. There are so many facets to business that prove to be a balancing act.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
It was only a few months ago that I was working as a paralegal in immigration law. Now I spend my days handcrafting candles in various forms and managing the day to day operations of a creative business. My legal career was rewarding and something I worked hard for in school and work. But after nearly a decade at a desk, I ached for change and for time away from the computer.
Without business experience, I developed and co-founded a small business from idea to reality. I’m quite proud of myself for taking this chance on a career change and embracing all of the challenges along the way.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
