Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Yokel.
Hi Seth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Well, I group in Greenville, SC and had played classical violin as a kid growing up. I picked up mandolin and found bluegrass in high school and fell in love immediately. Ended up moving out to Durango, CO to attend Fort Lewis College where I ended up meeting my bandmates. We formed High Country Hustle a little over five years ago now and have been playing shows all over the state and have begun branching out to the rest of the country. We released our first album in 2019 and then our second album this year back in June, both can be listened to on Spotify, Apple Music, all your standard streaming platforms. I’m really proud of the music we are creating and am just excited to be able to do what I do and live the life I am. It’s an incredible feeling to play music with your best friends.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
You know it’s been relatively smooth. Living in Durango has us pretty far from some big markets so that 6+ hour drive can be a little rough, but we’ve been doing it for years now and are trying to find ways to link shows to better alleviate that daunting drive every weekend.
The band isn’t quite a full-time job yet either and so getting back to work and dealing with schedules and everyday life comes with its struggles.
Overall it’s pretty amazing to travel and play music with people you love and respect as musicians and friends. I think that connection as friends has always been big for us.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I play Mandolin and sing in a bluegrass band called High Country Hustle.
I do quite a bit of songwriting for us and it’s one of my favorite things I get to do. Creating something out of nothing from my experiences and feelings and then getting to play it for folks and see it affect them is a special experience I don’t take lightly.
On that note, I’m extremely proud of both of our albums. Please go listen to them.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
As a mandolin player, forever student, and appreciator of good beer. I listen to the Mandolins and Beer podcast. Love the host’s questions and interview approach as he plays mandolin as well.
