Inspiring Conversations with Michelle and Michael Yencho of Butterfly Dog Food

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle and Michael Yencho.

Hi Michelle and Michael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It all started with our rescue dog named BJ. She was diagnosed with cancer at the age of seven and given 3-6 MONTHS to live. But we knew she had a lot more life left in her. Through tireless research, we developed a fresh dog food recipe and a regimen of tailored supplements to support BJ’s health. She lived nearly eight more YEARS! Since then, we have given all of our dogs this food, and it’s amazing how many health benefits it has provided. We decided to start Butterfly Dog Food and have been educating dog owners about the advantages of fresh food over kibble ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
(Laughing over here!) There are no smooth roads when you are trying to educate people and unravel the mistruths they’ve learned over many years of good marketing by big dog food brands. Many dog owners feel that kibble is a fine food for their dogs. Trying to help them understand exactly what it’s made of and how detrimental it is to a long and healthy life has been a challenge. We aren’t just selling dog food. We also have to educate others to help them understand the benefits of what we are offering. If only dogs could talk! They could tell you how good our food makes them feel.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are committed to making the highest quality food you can get for your dog. That’s why we grow our own produce on our farm here in Colorado Springs. And for ingredients we can’t grow, we have super high standards. No GMOs, no fillers, no hormones, no antibiotics, no synthetic vitamins or minerals, no junk. If we wouldn’t eat it ourselves, we won’t put it in Butterfly (Dog) Food.

Beyond having a passion for making the best dog food you can possibly buy, we care about our earth & community. We place sustainability high on our priority list by composting on our farm, using rainwater, and using 100% recyclable packaging. In 2022, we’re committed to supporting local animal rescues with a portion of our profits. We love Colorado Springs and we’re proud to be local!

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
“Luck” is said to be what happens when preparation meets opportunity. You need to buy a ticket to win the lottery. You need to put yourself in a position to have luck. I think making sure you are ready for when the opportunity presents itself is very important. That can only be done through hard work and dedication. Staying positive when life throws the inevitable “curve-ball” is crucial to success. I have found that when you are getting close to success, a lot of speed bumps will appear out of nowhere. It’s navigating that and staying the course that truly determines the outcome.
