Rising Stars: Meet David Sanders

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Sanders.

Hi David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2003 I embarked on teaching Transformative Kabbalah in small groups following the principles of learner-centered learning. At first, these groups met in people’s homes. As interest grew, we established a school for spiritual growth in Denver where classes are held weekly. While we encourage in-person study, many of our students engage with us via ZOOM. We are an open and inclusive school, welcoming all without any prior study or knowledge. We now have an established four year curriculum. It builds on the initial opening of a greater awareness about the external unseen reality in order to more fully encounter the internal unseen reality. The purpose of our study and practice is living a balanced and creative life and contributing to the world from the authenticity of an aware self.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a non-profit, there are always financial challenges but we have relied on the amazing support of our student community and the steadfast partnership of aligned foundations.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Transformative Kabbalah emerged from seeing the need for people to grow in their awareness about the world and themselves. As a clinical psychologist, who has an active therapy practice, I saw the opportunity to work in the spiritual realm in a broader context. Kabbalah does not start with a premise that there is a personal problem to be resolved–the premise is about the blind spots we all have as human beings. A more modern interpretation of the word Kabbalah is metaphor and that becomes a focus for insight about the stories that run our lives. Becoming aware of and changing our metaphors is deep, challenging and worthwhile work. I am most proud of the compliment received from one student; “David you are just an ordinary guy.” Indeed, it is ordinary people that can wind up helping themselves and others be extraordinary.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I love the beach as I grew up a block away from the Atlantic Ocean and when vacationing choose to be by the ocean and enjoy looking for seashells with my children.  I was also encouraged to read and there was a children’s book author who lived close by who “tried out” her stories on me. What a gift that was sharing her imaginative adventures of a small boy with me.
