Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Sutherland.
Hi Lindsey, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I really started experimenting with different art techniques and ways of living about three years ago when my family and I went through a massive shift. I never considered myself an artist until one winter day in 2019 when I went out and got myself a sketchbook and some watercolor paints and put what I was feeling onto the paper. This opened up a whole new world of self-expression that I’d never experienced before and ultimately lead me to a place where I was open enough to just be myself. Creating art was and continues to be an incredibly intimate way for me to heal, practice open-mindedness, and release the illusion of perfection. I am also incredibly passionate about health and wellness, especially mental wellness. I started doing yoga when I was pregnant with my son in 2010, but my awareness of the importance of health and wellness probably started when I was in high school. I totaled my parents truck. Oh, they grounded me, but they also put me in Tai Chi classes and had me read the Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff. Before this happened, I remember feeling like I was spinning out of control a little (I think my parents could see it too). My parents knew I needed a tool to bring myself back when I felt like I had no control, to remind me that I was, in fact, in control. This past year I was introduced to the world of herbal medicine, and this, paired with fitness and art, has completely transformed my way of being and thinking (yes, cliché, but one day when everyone is living a healthy, well life, they’ll see and know for themselves how extraordinary these kinds of practices are!). My aim now is to combine my passion for art, health, and wellness to help illuminate those same tools for others that my parents so graciously provided for me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh no, the road has not been smooth. But the path that is truly ours isn’t going to be paved. If fact, you’re probably going to have to bush-whack, and that is a really scary concept. I think in everything I’ve attempted, I always get to a point where I start to question if this is what I’m supposed to be doing. And that phrase “supposed to” is such a cheeky rascal. I think I was able to come through the challenges I ended up facing because I started to question who I was “supposed to” be doing it for or why I was “supposed to” be doing it at all. There are a lot of outside expectations that tell us we need to live one way, when inside it’s telling us our “supposed to” is different. That is our intuition, and being able to trust that inner voice changes the game.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a multimedia artist and health and wellness practitioner. My specialization changes but I work with watercolor paints, oil pastels, and I am most widely known for my pour paintings. I am most proud of the Quiet Hours pour painting series I did. I also believe this is what sets me apart as an artist. Doing recognizable landscape pour paintings is incredibly rewarding when they actually work out. I have also written a number of blogs on herbalism, homeschooling, and holistic lifestyle. I do hope to get more into the health and wellness community in the next year to connect with those that are passionate about holistic work.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck is a funny thing to me. I think we are all always creating actions that lead to what seems like chance successes or failures. With art, it’s all about connecting with the audience, with people who feel something from the expression. I think I’ve been incredibly fortunate to cross paths with so many people who resonate with my work. I don’t know that I’d call it luck, but rather the inevitable coming together of like-minds.
