Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Shepherd.
Hi Brooke, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Around 17 years ago, I was looking for a job that would allow me to be there for my kids but also bring in some money. I had friends that were Realtors and they asked if I wanted to do some admin stuff for them. I started doing that and then from there, I fell in love with real estate. The rest is history!
What keeps me in real estate is my love for people. Communicating with them, hearing their life stories and helping them achieve their goals. It doesn’t need to always be about real estate. I want to help people find a basketball team for their kids to play on. Or help them find a doctor, plumber, electrician, tutor or whatever else they need. I love to connect people.
One of my goals is to mentor/coach/speak to people about communication. In real estate, it is learning how to communicate effectively with your clients, other agents, and all people involved in a transaction. There are a lot of different personalities involved and emotions involved. A realtor needs to know how to get that deal to close with all parties happy, it takes strong communication to do that.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, a couple of years after I got into the business, we hit our first recession. You had to really work for your business and being newer, I had to really work hard to earn everyone’s trust. I had to learn how to work with short sales, foreclosures, and some very stressed-out sellers. But, I will say… It shaped me into the agent I am today.
One thing I would tell new agents is that when looking for a brokerage to hang your license. It is not always about the name of the brokerage, it is about the people you surround yourself with in the business. Go with a brokerage that has people wanting to help you and mentor you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in residential properties. When I first got into real estate, I wanted to just help out friends and family while bringing in some extra income. Then as my kids got older and I had more freedom, I started building a business with it. My passion is to help families whatever that means in real estate. If there are people out there that want to sell their home FSBO, I am their biggest cheerleader. If I feel that I need to decrease my commission to help someone out, I will. It is whatever is placed on my heart. I am here to help people in whatever capacity they need! Thankfully hanging my license at Real Broker, LLC allows for me to do that.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Oh boy, my favorite book is the Go Giver. Boy does it speak to my heart! I just want to help people, whether is is connecting them with people or something I can do to help. Another book I am really enjoying is Atomic Habits, I will probably listen to that one a minimum of 3x back to back. I think there is so much to learn in that book. As for podcasts, I like Live Un-Real, Real Estate Uncensored & Win Make Give. I love listening to other successful people, learning from them, and making it my own.
