Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Birdsall.
Jeff, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started writing music when I was 16. I played drums in a few bands in high school and college but kept leaving them because I wanted to front my own group.
When I moved to Fort Collins, I was determined to have my own group.
I’m grateful to have found some great guys who like my songs and who add their own flair to them, making them really unique.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s hard being an outsider in a small town.
It’s certainly all about who you know and have not gone to CSU nor grown up in town, it’s been a long road to get a foot in the door, and I still don’t think most people know of us (but that could be my own pessimism talking). After a few years of playing, my now ex gave birth to our daughter and since then my time has been really limited, but all I want to do is perform, so we make it work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve never been career driven. I despise money and wealth and material possessions. I’m not trying to become famous or tour the country. I did some small tours back in college, which was fun, but at this age, I’m not trying to stay out all night and crash on people’s apartment floors. If the music really took off and we were able to tour a bit more comfortably, I would be into it.
I’m also working on graphic design, creating our show posters and album art. I thought I would want to go down this path as a career but most of that tends to be marketing work, and the thought of working for a big company full of rich people makes me want to barf in my mouth. I’ve left many high-paying jobs because they became too stressful or took over my life.
What do you think about happiness?
I love performing original songs. I love playing in small packed rooms with an engaged audience.
I feed off the energy of the crowd, I love writing songs that go off in different directions, keeping the audience listening and guessing as to what’s gonna happen next. That being said I wouldn’t say our songs are gimmicky, but they certainly are not what you typically hear as far as melody, phrasing, and lyrics.
