Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Magee.
Hi Megan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My passion for nutrition started in my own health journey. As a child, I struggled with chronic ear infections, high use of anti-biotic, and stomach aches both from high use of antibiotics and after eating an animal protein-rich meal. Chronic ear infections in children can be from a dairy allergy. I believe I had an undiagnosed dairy allergy and continue to be sensitive today as an adult.
At the age of 16, I became a vegetarian which eliminated the stomach aches but sent me on the journey of figuring out what balanced nutrition looks like for a vegetarian. The standard American vegetarian diet tends to lean heavily on wheat and dairy products as they are the most accessible, but not always the most balanced (bagels, pizza, pasta, etc).
At the age of 35, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. After undergoing chemo and radiation, I struggled to get my health back. As an outcome of those treatments, I developed a high amount of food sensitivities, and could no longer eat most of the foods I was used to. I had to create an entirely new relationship with food, including ending my 20-year vegetarian lifestyle.
Both personally and professionally, I believe our relationship with food will change over the life cycle. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. A 3-year-old has different nutrition needs than a 16-year-old or a 40-year-old.
Regardless of where we are in health, my #1 wish is that we create peace with food and have a healthy relationship in ourselves and with food.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building a thriving nutrition practice has definitely taken time. I moved cross country several times, so it was hard to get established at first. I’m very blessed to have a predominantly referral-based practice now.
My clients have experienced such big changes in health and weight that they are happy to refer their friends and family. I am now 100% virtual, which also allows me to work with clients anywhere.
As you know, we’re big fans of Nourish Nutrition Consulting. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Nourish Nutrition Consulting (NNC) was created with the goal of educating clients on the importance of balanced eating and nutrition for a lifetime of health. Health is a journey, not a one-day thing; likewise eating well is an important part of everyday living to stay healthy.
Most clients choose to work with NNC when their health status changes. They recognize that they do not feel as well as they want or they do not want to live the rest of their lives on medications. There is recognition of a need to change, re-evaluate health goals, and learn new tools to reach those goals. Most people are wanting to actively work on optimizing health and or prevention, and are looking at alternatives from mainstream disease management approaches.
I specialize in working with clients with chronic health conditions, specifically auto-immune conditions, including Hashimoto’s, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, MS, and diabetes, to name a few. I also support clients in general care conditions including sleep/energy, gut and digestive complaints, and hormone balance. As a Registered Dietetic Tech, I think about supporting the body from a biology/physiology approach, including how do we support the body in healing when there is a health change. I am also a Certified Mind Body Eating Coach and bring in psychology to address how our daily stressors and past traumas or experiences directly impact our relationship with self and food.
All the work I do is customized and tailored to the individual. It’s never a one-size fits all approach. Services or support may include consultations, blood work, specialized testing including micronutrient panels or food sensitivity testing, stress management techniques, mind-body eating, and more. An individualized care plan is created to serve each client best. Clients also have access to me between sessions for any extra support needed.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For someone just starting out, I recommend building relationships. Create a community of people you know, like and trust that you feel comfortable referring to and you know they will refer to you.
