Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Barta.

Jay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I developed the idea of becoming a dentist after an injury knocked out my front tooth at the age of 15. I was fascinated that the dentist was able to reimplant the tooth because at the time, losing a tooth felt as though my life was ending! After seeing what my dentist was able to do for me at that time, becoming a dentist was my new aspiration in life. I grew up in Michigan, where I completed all of my schooling. I earned my undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University, after which I attended the University of Detroit Mercy, School of Dentistry, graduating with my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2014.

My mother grew up in the Denver metro area, so I grew up visiting Colorado and dreamt of living here from a young age. After school, I chose to make Colorado home in 2015. For seven years, I worked in a wide variety of dental practice settings including public health, corporate practice, and private practice. In November 2021 I opened The Dentist in Louisville after deciding that starting my own private practice would bring me the most happiness out of my career as a dentist.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting the practice has had some bumps along the way. I caught COVID about 5 weeks after opening, forcing the practice to shut down for a time. December 30, 2021, was our first day back to work after my illness, when we were greeted by the Marshall Fire, forcing us to close again for a time. After such a tragedy, the community understandably had priorities other than visiting the dentist.

This created an unfortunate delay in the early months of the practice, as our start was slower than anticipated.

Thankfully, Louisville is an impressive, welcoming, and resilient community, because the folks who were able to become patients of the practice were incredible with their support of our new small business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Dentist in Louisville?
I chose to start The Dentist in Louisville because I want to have a positive impact on the health of the Louisville community. I chose to be the sole owner of this practice because the vision I have is for a practice that helps people feel comfortable at the dentist’s. As we all know, dentists are one of humanity’s top fears. There are very legitimate reasons for that….it is a place where the patient feels they have no control over what is happening.

Many people have experienced pain during a procedure or have some associated trauma that has existed since childhood. There are many reasons that can play into a person’s fear of the dentist, which is why we make such a priority to empathize with our patients. I want everyone to feel heard, to feel as though they are being treated as a friend, and that we actually care about their overall well-being. When you enter The Dentist in Louisville, you are entering a judgment-free zone. We will always educate our patients on the status of their health, and do our best to deliver that information in a way that avoids feelings of shame. My mission is to change the way dentistry is experienced. Delivering this kind of service is what I feel most proud of.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Our practice model is not dependent upon patients who drive by our practice. The patients that choose to make us their dental home do so because they have done their research. We have more than 100 reviews and a 5-star rating because patients feel valued and heard.
