Check Out Emilee Melin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emilee Melin.

Hi Emilee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When it comes to my career in art, I might be considered a late bloomer. When I was younger, I had the “American dream” to get a good-paying job and settle down. It took a journey for me to be able to chase my dreams of being an artist. I was born and raised in Alaska, but have always had the inspiration to travel. I came down to the lower 48 fresh out of high school and bounced between states until I landed here in Colorado. I fell in love. The opportunities this state has to offer can be credited for leading me into my art career.

A huge turning point for me was painting a mural at The Exchange Coffee Shop in Downtown Colorado Springs.

From there, I have continued to seek opportunities. In 2022, I made the decision to build out my truck and move in.

This gave me the flexibility to go where the jobs are. Since I have had art jobs across the state of Colorado, and been able to branch into some other opportunities in Maryland and Alaska. I’m grateful for the path, though turbulent at times, that has brought me to where I am today….painting murals, showcasing original artworks, and selling prints and stickers.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The majority of struggles I faced, I would call growing pains. My biggest enemy as an artist is my own self critique and self-doubt. Having confidence in what you do is key. I used to be very timid and shy, it has taken a lot of intention for me to grow my confidence. Now, I trust and believe in the journey wholeheartedly and I’m confident in what I do.

Another challenge would be learning to be okay with rejections. I haven’t always gotten the job I wanted or sold as many pieces as I would’ve liked. But I’ve changed my mindset about those sorts of expectations and am okay with whatever ends up happening. I don’t let anything hold me back and I always strive to keep a positive attitude. I’m always looking forward to what’s next and not allowing the past to weigh me down.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My favorite thing to do as an artist is Murals. I enjoy interior design and feeling the atmosphere of a space. It’s a game changer for businesses when there is artwork that draws people in. I love it. When I paint a mural, I strive to create balance and life through the art. When we only have so much time to live, why not create an environment that fuels positivity, feel-good vibes, and happiness?

I also enjoy painting canvases and creating collections. I strive to get my artwork hanging in as many places as possible. I like to have fun with my paintings and break out of norms so I end up having multiple different types of art. I’m inspired by nature and our environment, emotions, and perspective. I lean into flowers and plant life a lot but also enjoy painting different characters and collages of whatever needs to come out creatively.

For stickers, I enjoy making simple things that feel good and often sayings that inspire. One of my staples is the saying “Can’t F*ck with my Happy”. I created this phrase early on in my art career. For me, it’s an empowering quote that encourages a strong sense of self.

It means that I’m going to hold my ground, be true to myself, and not allow others to influence my well-being.

Today’s world is suffocated with problems and I believe one of the greatest things we can do is encourage a love for oneself and others. In doing so, we can lighten the heaviness.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I hope the industry continues to grow. It seems we are at a time where there is a lot of support for artists and creatives alike. With every intention I’ll try to be a helping hand in keeping that alive.
