Daily Inspiration: Meet Lisa Day

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Day.

Hi Lisa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My family has a long tradition of baking and cooking, in general. So my love of it comes naturally. I have spent a great deal of time studying and practicing the art and the formation of Cottage Creations Custom Confections seemed like a natural fit.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always obstacles to anything that you wish to achieve. If it is important enough to you, however, you put in what it takes to overcome them. Baking at altitude can initially provide some difficulty. However, once you start to understand the science behind the process it becomes much easier and provides the knowledge of how to adapt.

Also, during the COVID lockdowns, it became much harder at times to source ingredients that I was accustomed to working with. Developing relationships with manufacturers and wholesalers did help to ease the shortage somewhat.

Luckily, the egg, butter, and flour pipelines now seem to be running smoothly again.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Cottage Creations, we strongly believe that there is no substitute for quality. It is paramount to us that all our custom products should not just look amazing but also taste amazing! We are committed to using high-quality ingredients and time-honored baking methods to ensure that all our desserts taste as good as they look.

Focus on our clients, their needs, and satisfaction, is paramount to Cottage Creations Cakes’ success. People want customization and personal touches for their cakes. It is our job to work with them to make their vision come to life and to execute a design that adds an extra special element to their event. We strive to create cakes that are a joy to look at and even better to eat.

Also, continual learning and growth in the field are extremely important. There is never time to sit back and think “I’ve got this.” There are always new and different techniques to put into practice. I think staying on top of the game through constant study is vital.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Growing up, my father worked for the State Department so I was privileged to have the opportunity to live in many beautiful countries. When I was around 12 years old, my family and I were living in Madrid and decided it would be nice to stay in a Parador for a few nights as a small getaway. Paradors are hotels run by the Spanish government that is mostly comprised of restored castles, monasteries, fortresses, and other old, historic buildings.

Parts of the one that we were staying in had areas that were not completely restored yet. My friend and I went exploring and found a small opening in a wall that we could fit through. When on the other side, we found ourselves on a small balcony overlooking the castle’s old chapel. The windows were broken and everything was covered in dust, but it was so beautiful. It was a very magical moment in my childhood that I will always remember.
