Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Best. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Derek Best’s first structure was an underground fort in his childhood backyard in Idaho. He tunneled in, reinforced the space, and created “living quarters” that remained intact for over 30 years! His resume includes a Bachelor of Science in Construction and Design from the University of Idaho and nearly 25 years in the construction industry honing his craft and polishing his skills.
What his resume doesn’t show, is his lifelong passion for building. Derek feels a true calling to partner with his clients and help to create their dream homes from a vision on paper to the finished product that they are proud to call home! Each custom home he builds is a reflection of the homeowner that is brought to life as a collaborative effort through each step of the process.
As Derek says, “My passion for construction has taken me through commercial projects, to log home building worldwide, to remodeling in the wilds of Alaska, to project management for 10,000 square foot Denver homes, to running my own company.” Based in Evergreen, Colorado, Best Custom Homes builds throughout the mountain foothills and mountain ski towns, as well as the suburbs of Denver. Additionally, they have just recently expanded into Meridian, Idaho to return to Derek’s roots.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Derek began building in Idaho as a boy. From there he ventured to PrecisionCraft Homes where he spent several years learning every detail of the building business, from the ground up.
Finally, after several years there, he realized it was time to start his own company where he could manage the custom home projects that his clients envisioned. It hasn’t always been easy, there have been struggles and challenges along the way. But Derek has persevered to help every homeowner achieve their dream.
One of the challenges for any business owner is the ability to build a team that shares your enthusiasm and commitment to excellence. Derek feels he has built an incredibly strong team that reflects the values he aspires to. Without them, the business would not be the success that it is today!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
In his “free” time, Derek loves running half-marathons and 10Ks or mountain biking and hiking near his home in Evergreen. But more than anything, he cherishes spending time with his two children, Charlie and Maggie.
