Exploring Life & Business with Abby Wilson of Abby Elise Creative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Wilson.

Abby Wilson

Hi Abby, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began my writing career in the publishing industry as an intern at Glamour magazine in New York City, followed by a short stint at a social media agency in Iowa, my home state. After getting married, I quickly moved out to Denver and discovered life outside fleeting tweets and long editorials.

My first agency job out west introduced me to the world of advertising — I fell in love with getting to know and hone brand voices. The copy brevity brought me joy, allowing me to incorporate my poetic creative writing education. The photo shoots and voiceover sessions excited me, breathing life into my work.

I continued my career at other agencies out of Denver and San Francisco, where I wrote for global tech brands alongside inspiring creatives and brilliant leaders. After having my first baby (of three!), I started my freelance copywriting business and have since enjoyed the autonomy and flexibility, of co-creating with brands and agencies all over the world.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Struggles are inevitable, each a learning experience. Thus far in my freelance career, I’ve had three main takeaways:

1) Get everything in writing before you begin (I’m a fan of creating estimates and invoices in the Harvest platform);

2) Secure a financial professional to help you invest earnings and plan for retirement (since you don’t have an automatic company 401K match anymore); and

3) Don’t work with mean people (life’s too short).

We’ve been impressed with Abby Elise Creative LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As owner of Abby Elise Creative LLC, I’m a one-woman show that partners with B2C and B2B agencies and brands to provide copywriting, editing, and creative direction.

I specialize in brand identity: writing copy for websites, print and digital ads, video scripts, manifestos, taglines, CRM, and paid media. My favorite industries to write for include outdoor lifestyle, sustainable fashion, luxury automotive, beauty, technology, and food and beverage.

I’ve been told that people like working with me because my writing is fresh, thoughtful, and compelling. One of the things I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is the relationships I’ve formed with my clients — and when word-of-mouth referrals introduce me to even more amazing people.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I’ve learned that stagnancy is not an option in this industry. To remain competitive and succeed, you must keep up with what’s next. You’ve got to keep growing and educating yourself, whether that’s by taking courses, attending lectures, or doing your research.

Take artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, for example — the technology that some say is threatening jobs everywhere. I’m more of a glass-half-full kind of girl though; I don’t see AI as a threat, rather, I see it as an important tool, and one that cannot be ignored. As such, I’ve been dabbling with different AI platforms, including Chat GPT and Remini (hence the AI headshot!). This technology is fascinating and, at times, all-consuming.

The opportunities for AI creativity are endless. But it’s also important to remember that, at its core, AI comes from nothing more than a computer. While it can spit out words in seconds, it can’t emote. It is not a strategist. It can’t authentically get into a consumer’s mind. It doesn’t know what an ice-cold mountain stream feels like, what a juicy Palisade peach tastes like, or what an intoxicatingly fresh newborn baby smells like.

For those reasons, I am happy to be a professional human writer who interacts with, learns from, and finds joy in creating with other wonderful humans every day.
