Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber King.
Hi Amber, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey began in a typical middle-class family, where the warmth of parental love and a comfortable home provided a solid foundation. However, as I entered adolescence, the allure of experimentation led me down a perilous path. From 13 to 23, I grappled with the insidious grip of substance use, a battle that eventually led me to despair. During those tumultuous years, I wrestled with the shadows that substance dependency cast over my life, straining relationships and causing my aspirations to crumble.
At 23, I found myself at a crossroads, facing the stark reality of homelessness as a direct consequence of my struggles. At this juncture, I took a courageous step toward redemption by entering treatment. With unwavering determination and the support of compassionate professionals and amazing peers, I embarked on a journey of recovery and self-discovery. The process was arduous, filled with moments of self-reflection and a fervent desire to reclaim my life derailed by addiction.
Emerging from treatment, I rebuilt my life from the ground up, armed with newfound resilience and a deep appreciation for the gift of recovery. Channeling my lived experiences into a newfound purpose, I embarked on a mission to extend a lifeline to others trapped by the same struggles that had once bound me for the last eight years. Since joining the team at Foundry Treatment Center Steamboat, I have continued to dedicate myself to crafting innovative programs that would bridge the gap in addressing the unique needs of individuals grappling with substance use, trauma, and mental health conditions across both rural and urban landscapes.
Today, as I stand at the forefront of a comprehensive approach to healing, I draw upon my narrative as a source of inspiration and guidance. My trajectory from the throes of addiction to the realm of transformative recovery fuels my passion to create tailored interventions that empower individuals to rewrite their stories, just as I have rewritten mine. The Foundry Treatment Center’s mission aligns seamlessly with my aspirations, allowing me to contribute meaningfully to the reclamation of lives and the restoration of hope across the diverse tapestry of Colorado’s communities.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For eight challenging years in the behavioral healthcare industry, I navigated a turbulent path that ultimately led me to a place of empowerment and change. In those initial years, I found myself working within programs that operated with questionable ethics, an environment that presented profound moral conflicts. Witnessing the mistreatment of vulnerable clients and feeling helpless to effect real change, I grappled with a disheartening sense of frustration. I saw individuals already battling their demons being let down by a system meant to provide solace and healing.
Amid this disheartening backdrop, I struggled to make my voice heard in advocating for the proper treatment of clients. Despite my unwavering dedication and vigorous advocacy, I often encountered resistance from colleagues who seemed content with the status quo. This period of my journey was marked by an uphill battle, a fight to dismantle entrenched systems prioritizing profit over the well-being of those seeking help. My determination to advocate for ethical and effective treatment strategies often left me feeling like a lone voice in a sea of indifference.
Adding another layer to my struggles was the experience of being a woman aspiring to be seen as a leader in an industry where gender biases persisted. I encountered skepticism and dismissiveness, facing the challenge of proving my competence and expertise repeatedly. As I tried to rise above these obstacles, I realized that being a woman seeking to lead and make a meaningful impact required extraordinary resilience and tenacity.
However, my journey took a transformative turn when I joined Foundry a year ago. Here, I discovered a supportive and inclusive environment that valued my experiences and insights. The organization’s commitment to client well-being aligned with my mission, allowing me to finally channel my passion into a space where my efforts were recognized and celebrated. At Foundry, I found the platform I had longed for to advocate for ethical treatment, create impactful programs, and shape the industry’s future. My struggles over the years became the catalyst for my growth, enabling me to emerge as a resilient leader unafraid to challenge the status quo and spearhead positive change in the lives of those we serve.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In my current Community Outreach and Special Projects role, I have had the privilege of weaving together my passion for community engagement, strategic planning, and creating meaningful change. One of my primary specialties lies in cultivating and nurturing community relationships that are integral to the success of our mission. By forging strong ties with local organizations, healthcare providers, schools, and other stakeholders, I’ve established a network of support that amplifies our reach and fosters a collaborative approach to addressing the complex challenges of substance use, trauma, and mental health.
An essential aspect of my work has been organizing educational events for community stakeholders. These events serve as platforms to disseminate accurate information, reduce stigma, and foster a deeper understanding of the nuanced issues individuals face when dealing with these conditions. By hosting seminars, workshops, and discussions, I facilitate an environment where open dialogue flourishes and the community becomes more informed and empathetic.
Additionally, my involvement in Special Projects has allowed me to delve into our organization’s inner workings and identify areas for growth and enhancement. This role requires a keen eye for recognizing untapped potential, streamlining processes, and implementing innovative solutions. By identifying gaps in our services and finding ways to bridge them, I contribute to the evolution of our programs to better meet the diverse and evolving needs of those we serve.
What I’m most proud of is the tangible impact I’ve been able to make through my work. The connections I’ve forged, the knowledge I’ve disseminated, and the initiatives I’ve spearheaded have collectively contributed to the positive transformation of individuals’ lives and the broader community. What sets me apart from others is my unique blend of lived experience, professional expertise, and unyielding dedication.
Having navigated the challenges of addiction and recovery myself, I possess a profound empathy that fuels my commitment to advocacy. I understand the complexities firsthand, allowing me to approach my work with authenticity and an unwavering desire to make a difference. This combination of personal connection, strategic insight, and a deep-rooted passion enables me to approach Outreach and Special Projects in a holistic and impactful way that resonates with clients and colleagues alike.
