Today we’d like to introduce you to RJ Porfilio.

RJ Porfilio

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From working a 9-5 job and seeking more I was set out to wanting to be my own boss and make an impact on the world. I quit my job of 8 years with little to no plan to start the new life of being a business owner. It was a very tough first year trying to find my footing on the impact I wanted to make until I came across the journey I’m on today. I started making content on Instagram about my life with a 15-year ADHD diagnosis my unique outlook and how I take life on.

That message started to gain traction and catch the attention of the right people in the industry. I ended up partnering with the biggest brand for ADHD on Instagram (@ADHDoers) with over 1 million followers at the time of writing this, to help promote their popular ‘pay what you want ADHD tools’ from there I host a podcast bringing on guests to tell their ADHD stories and how they create success with their ADHD in hopes to inspire others with this diagnosis that they can create success in their lives too.

While working with this brand I came across another company that is virtual but still based out of Denver that helps people start online marketing agencies and joined into that group. I found myself co-finding a marketing agency where I and my partner help wholesale real estate agents promote their services to consumers. My partner handles all the operations and running ads while I take on the sales and coach our clients on how to focus more on their business perform their sales at a high level and create better success.

On top of that, I was invited to coach this group to other agency owners where I help them with creating the best mindset they can and how they can increase focus and productivity. I finally fell in love with the process of what I do and how to help others. As someone with ADHD, it can be very hard to stick to one thing and roll with it. Going through many different ideas for how my business can go I knew a few things were very important.

I needed to genuinely care for what I do, I needed to limit distractions and doing too much and falling victim to what we call “shiny object syndrome” (where one loses focus on one thing to start another thing and never makes enough progress in anything), I wanted to help others in something that I could see the result and make an impact on individuals lives, and I wanted to never lose sight on the things that mattered to me and the entire reason why I wanted to leave my 9-5 job in the first place.

The ‘game’ of life and business is not meant to be won its meant to be played. I do not go about this to win the game I go about this to play the game at a high level and to continue to level up until I physically cannot. I have an amazing girlfriend who supports me through my best and worst days and honestly could not have made it this far without her. Choosing a partner who supports you and will pick you up when you’re down and celebrate with you on your wins is probably the most important thing in this journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Quitting my job with little to no plan was difficult. On top of that, I had bills to pay, a dog to feed, and a life to make. I had to swallow my pride and downgrade my lifestyle now to live the life that I want in the future. It was far from easy, Jim Carrey says “Most people won’t downgrade their life for 2 years to live the life of their dreams for the rest of their lives” and I had to live by that every day.

I sold one of my dream cars I owned, broke the lease to my place, and moved into my parent’s spare bedroom. That was hard for me, I had to go from making money every two weeks and knowing everything was okay with 100% freedom and autonomy to taking my entire life and downgrading it not knowing where my next paycheck would come from. I left myself no other option than to figure it out.

From there most people hit what they want in a few months and to be honest that is what I thought would happen as well. That is far from my reality. I lost it all, multiple times. From seeing negative in my account to being behind on bills. I left myself questioning if I was made for this more times than I could count. But I did not make that an option for me. A coach once told me that I had no other option than to figure it out. Going back to take a 9-5 wasn’t even an option. I had to figure it out, and figure it out I did.

What I learned from there is that I will be okay I needed to go through this multiple times to learn my biggest lesson which was it’s not about how you handle things when things are good that creates success it’s how you handle things when things are bad. I had every excuse to give up in the book, shoot, I still do but to make giving up an option is not the way I wanted to look at it. To this day I’m still growing, I’m still learning, I have a lot to go and I’m only getting started, and I’m still making mistakes. But, that is totally okay.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My main brand is Focus. I make content online about focus, my podcast is about focus, and the coaching services I do is about how to focus. Focusing is hard, in fact, it’s one of the main reasons why a lot of businesses can fail. We live in a world where everything requires a short attention span and a lack of impulse control.

That’s why everything boils down to how can we be dialed into the thing we do and not stray away or miss out on the work that needs to be done. I am not perfect at it and no one is that is why having people around you to help you if you are about to fall off is so important. I am most proud of my foundation. Faith and family are what holds me together.

Business is NOT easy and creating and setting up a good foundation for when that shows up is vital. My girlfriend is there not only emotionally but inside the business as well. She has helped pick up the things that fall through the cracks that are so important and she is on top of it. She has dropped it all to help me and I am forever grateful for that.

My family supports me on this wild journey and the fact they helped me build my business out of their spare bedroom was the most important factor in this entire journey I wouldn’t have even started if it wasn’t for that. My faith in God has not only blessed me with the drive to take this journey but has helped me when I thought it was the end of the road of this business every single time. Each time I put my faith in him there was an answer to take me to my next step.

What sets me aside is my energy, I want to over-deliver for everything I go into. I want to work the hardest I can and put in the most effort physically possible. Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant’s outlook on being the best you have the practice and give the best.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I am a 4th generation Colorado native. Colorado will always be my home. My grandfather was a federal judge out of Denver for the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals so it’s safe to say my family has always been a part of Colorado. What I like best about Colorado is how diverse this state is. You can go from the City to the country, to a mountain town all in one day.

I love Denver sports from the Broncos, Rockies, Nuggets, and Avs to our smaller sports teams like the Eagles and now riding CU Buffs! It’s hard to say what I like least about the city. I will say if I could control how many months it sowed I would enjoy that. I wish Colorado’s Fall weather was all 12 months out of the year!
