Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn McMorran. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Rocky Mountain Rhythm was originally started as a simple Facebook group, created as a page for local tap teachers and students to get in touch with each other, share ideas, and any upcoming studio events.
In 2015, six Denver tap dancers got together and decided that the best way to present tap dancing to the community and get more people involved would be to get out and show them what tap dancing is, and why we love it so much. That was the beginning of Rocky Mountain Rhythm’s performing company under the directorship of Claire Sheek. Since then, the company has spent the last several years performing throughout the Denver-Metro area, hosting master classes with guest instructors for local students as well as hosting their own various classes and tap jams.
Rocky Mountain Rhythm is wrapping up its 8th season and is co-directed by Elijah Meader and Kaitlyn McMorran.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most performing arts companies, COVID was tough on RMR.
The founder, Claire Sheek, had just moved to Texas to join the professional tap company Tapestry as a principal dancer, so on top of Zoom rehearsals and not knowing when our next performance would be was challenging.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Rocky Mountain Rhythm is Colorado’s premiere tap dance company. Tap dance is an American-born art form, but tends to get the back seat in a lot of professional settings.
We hope to inspire people to see professional tap dance, take our donation-based community classes, and experience the joy of tap dance. We also are big on community. RMR was founded as a way to bring the tap community together, so everything we do has that community lens over it.
