Life & Work with Ilaria Fabrizio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ilaria Fabrizio.

Ilaria Fabrizio

Hi Ilaria, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I have loved drawing since I was a kid: I studied at the local Art School, then I moved to Urbino to study at the Academy of Fine Arts, where I got my Bachelor’s Degree in Multimedia Design and where I discovered video art. Despite drawing, filming was a very versatile and interesting medium to explore.

With my group of friends from University, we were preparing for the exams all together and we were spending so many hours brainstorming and making tests I think that was the moment I realized that I wanted to work with video rather than illustration. After the BA, I moved to Milan, where I attended a course in editing and filming techniques, and after 1 year, I started working in my first Studio.

I have been really lucky as I had great mentors during this working experience, who taught me everything I know and which I still apply in my everyday life now that I live and work in London as a Senior Video Editor. I still love drawing and recently I have felt the need to rediscover it. A few years ago I created a page on Instagram called Fàbila (which sounds similar to the Latin word “fabula” (fable, tale), and coincidentally it’s also the combination of the first 3 letters of my name and surname.

I have started posting my drawings and recently I have started experimenting the animation too, in particular, I love creating short conceptual video clips using my illustrations.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Up and down, like everything in life. I am still hitting the road and I am still trying to understand what direction I should take, what I should do with my art, and in what way I should canalize these skills to make it become part of my everyday life.

For a certain period, I had an Etsy page where I was selling some prints of mine, but after a while, I realized that it wasn’t my cup of tea. Now that I have started exploring the animation I feel more in line with what I am currently doing for a living too. Let’s see where it will lead me!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a video editor/filmmaker with a passion for illustration. I currently work for a company but I am trying to develop more of my projects and move to the creative field. I have recently started to create short animations of my drawings, which first I realize on paper and then digitalize with the scanner.

I use a particular drawing technique called “dotwork” which is quite difficult as it consists of creating an image by drawing millions of little dots. It’s a meditative exercise for me and I think this stands out in my drawings as they have something mystical in their atmosphere (or at least, this is what many people told me).

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I have never been to Denver, but I would love to visit it one day!
