Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelique Alcaraz.
Hi Angelique, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my business during the tail end of COVID-19 in a small mountain town called Bailey, CO. Being in such a small town I really dived into getting to know my community so that I could serve them better. After connecting with many members of the community I discovered I had a passion for serving mothers and shooting family photography.
Eventually, I ended up moving to Littleton, CO and absolutely love it here! I am in a great location where I can still serve my mountain families and meet new mamas in the city as well.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been ups and downs. I think my biggest challenge has been imposter syndrome. In today’s day and age, there is SO MUCH you can learn from free resources online and learning comes naturally to me. I took that in stride and it was expected but what I wasn’t prepared for was the massive waves of talent I would be hit with on a regular basis.
In the early days, I allowed that talent to let insecurity creep into my heart. I have now come to a point where I am proud of my work and the level of service I provide. However, in the past, there were times I would look at other photographer’s work and wonder if I could truly call myself a professional.
I have since invested in myself in many ways, including gear, mindset, practice, and education, and now stand at a place where I know there will always be artists more and less skilled than I am. And I am okay with that. My job is not to fall into a comparison trap, my job is to do all I can to continue to improve my client experience.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional photographer. I specialize in family and maternity photography, but on occasion, I enjoy expressing my creativity through other session types such as weddings, headshots, and senior portraits. I would say I am most known for my editing style. I really enjoy producing images with a warm golden light — a honey glow. I would say I am most proud of my development as a professional photographer.
Owning my own business has helped me to step outside of my comfort zone in ways I could have never imagined. What sets me apart is how hard I have worked to create an easy seamless client experience. I always aim for the families I work with to feel fully supported throughout the process and close out the experience with beautiful, personalized images to display in their homes.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years I see this industry thriving. We live in such a digital age, that people are always in search of more photos to share and display. I feel like this generation is also all about breaking the so-called “generational curses” in child-rearing and parenting more intentionally as well.
A beautiful way to do that is by having regular family photos taken; I read a study that children felt a stronger sense of belonging within their families when they saw family portraits in their homes. Images are such an important part of human history and human presence, and I don’t see that changing ever.
A huge shift I predict in the industry is more use of AI. It is already booming and is only predicted to improve. In my industry, I see it being used for website copy, blog posts, captions, content planning, and image expansion and I can’t even imagine what is going to come next. I know some people think AI can replace professional photographers, but I truly think it enhances the luxurious feel of a true experience tailored to your family.
