Today we’d like to introduce you to Colt Maule.
Hi Colt, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have been drawn to art and creative outlets for as long as I can recall. Life has led me to ebb and flow in numerous directions in both my personal and professional life. Although many of those directions allowed for creativity of some sort, a lot of hard work, struggle, sacrifices, and challenges are part of the ongoing process of following a lifelong dream of becoming a full-time artist.
Achieving the proper headspace, finding the time to set aside to create, having stability, discovering inspiration, and having the discipline of follow-through have taken years. However, I discovered all of that life experience led me to the inspiration I needed to become the artist I always wanted to be.
Life has taken me to the wild places, hidden between the shadows of civilization. Where the raw and rugged landscape demands attention and breathes inspiration. Art born of Adventure.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road? What fun would that be? I would say my life has been similar to the types of roads and trails I am prone to traverse; full of adventure and astounding beauty, as well as obstacles and challenges, curves, and ups and downs.
Some of my biggest struggles relate to balance; learning to navigate a positive and healthy path in the face of negativity and adversity on a mental and emotional level. On a physical level, I have to think outside the box to be able to support my family and the life we consciously choose to live off the grid at nearly 11,000’ in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am known for being myself. For being an adventurous wayfarer. For being an artist, a creative and feral. For being an outlaw, not in the criminal sense, but as an individual generally living outside the laws and boundaries pertaining to what is the perceived norm.
In my wife’s words explaining my art, “Colt has an amazingly artistic eye for photography and the unique capability of capturing the emotion of a landscape in a photo to where it translates to the viewer. Colt also excels in choosing a subject and then creating amazing works of art across an array of mediums.”
Although I love the adventure of capturing photographs in the wild, the process of creating other works of art to celebrate the adventure found in wild places is what I enjoy when I am not out exploring. I also find it inspirational to work with reclaimed and natural materials.
Harvesting a dead tree for fire mitigation and going through the whole process of turning that tree into a work of art or handmade frame for a photograph is very rewarding. Creating something from raw materials, which are generally works of art in themselves, is extremely satisfying. My artwork is very unique and not for everyone. But those who get it, get it.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Don’t know and don’t care. I will do me and follow intuition because that has worked best for my life and happiness.
