Conversations with Andrew Haught

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Haught. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Andrew Haught

Fly Janet emerged from the clandestine world of Janet Airlines, where Chris Badger and Andrew Haught crossed paths while shuttling employees to and from top-secret government installations. Bonding over their shared love of music and their experiences working in the shadows, they formed a musical partnership that would become Fly Janet.

Drawing inspiration from their covert surroundings, Fly Janet crafts atmospheric surf rock that delves into themes of secrecy, longing, and the unknown. Their music transports listeners to a realm where mystery and melody intertwine.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting the band, Fly Janet, especially one born out of a unique background like working for Janet Airlines, presents its own set of challenges and hardships. Here are some examples:

1. Secrecy Constraints: Given their former employment in a secretive environment, Chris and Drew have had to navigate legal and contractual obligations regarding confidentiality. This limits their ability to openly discuss their past experiences, impacting their ability to promote their brand in a traditional manner.

2. Time Constraints: Balancing their newfound passion for music with their demanding jobs was challenging. Flight schedules and unpredictable work hours made it difficult for Chris and Drew to find time to rehearse, write songs, and perform together… so they quit.

3. Limited Networking Opportunities: The secretive nature of their former workplace has limited their ability to network within the music industry. Building connections with other musicians, booking agents, and industry professionals has been challenging due to their unconventional backgrounds.

4. Financial Constraints: Starting a band requires financial investment for instruments, equipment, recording sessions, and touring expenses. Depending on their financial situation, The duo have had to make sacrifices and find creative solutions to fund Fly Janet.

5. Identity Crisis: Transitioning from a secretive career to pursuing music full-time has caused an identity crisis for Chris and Drew. They have struggled with defining themselves as musicians while reconciling their past experiences and identities associated with their former jobs.

6. Lack of Support: Friends, family, and colleagues have not been understanding or supportive of their decision to leave their jobs and pursue music. This lack of support added emotional strain and doubt to their journey as they embarked on this new chapter in their lives.

Despite these challenges, Chris and Drew’s shared passion and determination to pursue their dreams have helped them overcome obstacles and forge ahead with Fly Janet.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The band’s origin story, as former employees of Janet Airlines, adds a fascinating layer of intrigue to their narrative. Their experiences working in a secretive environment provide them with a rich source of inspiration for their music and set them apart from bands with more conventional backgrounds.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Believe in yourself.
