Today we’d like to introduce you to Patience Elizabeth.
Hi Patience, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I always knew my work would be with children in some way. in 1997 I got my first job as a preschool teaching assistant. I worked as a preschool teacher for 7 years while getting my bachelor’s degree in psychology with a focus on Early childhood development. Working with the families at school and learning about child development I realized how much information parents didn’t have access to. I began creating classes for parents.
In 2004, after graduating with my master’s in Educational Psychology I created my business to teach and coach parents. I had 3 small children of my own and was excited to work with families in this way. As I started working with families I taught childbirth education classes and became aware of the impact of birth and the early postpartum time have on the entire parenting journey. This led me to add birth and postpartum doula to my services. I attended births and supported postpartum families for many years all while increasing my classes and one-on-one services for families.
In 2014 I opened a physical space called The Family Room to host my classes as well as other professionals who serve parents. The space was an amazing resource for families in the Denver area. I had to close my doors in 2019 because I was getting a divorce. At that stage, I moved to all virtual teaching and coaching. Which was perfect timing as I was already all online when the pandemic shut down the world. Over the last 20 years, I have been working with families to help parents have more confidence and understanding of how to support their children.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many challenges in the 20 years I’ve been in business. Having 4 children and finding a balance of family and work was an ongoing challenge. As every working mother understands. There was the challenge of finding places to teach classes. I taught in every family space and store that existed in the Denver-metro area from Colorado Springs to Boulder.
Most were only in business for 3-8 years before they closed. Keeping spaces specific for family education is extremely difficult. Most places were retail spaces or yoga studios. That is still a challenge today. Almost every business for parents had to close due to COVID. Now the online space is great for one-on-one, but it’s difficult to create group connections. Families with young children need community. Finding a way to create that community for families is an ongoing challenge for all of us who support them.
Now with social media platforms being the biggest place new parents are getting information, the task of standing out as the actual resource that is evidence and science-based is even more difficult. Parents have access to so many opposing ideas they can be easily overwhelmed and shut down.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Patience Parenting Services, LLC?
I’m literally the original OG parenting coach. 20 years ago people questioned me about this work. I knew this was going to be an important service for parents. I’m different because I focus on the biology, research, cultural influences, and my extensive experience both professionally and personally. I have more experience than almost any other parenting coach.
As a parenting coach, I work with parents to give them a deeper understanding of the child. The strategies and tools I give families are tailored specifically to their needs. Many other coaches are trained in a specific philosophy and strategy. Their training limits their ability to tailor their support. I work with families on the big areas that create struggle in the early years, Sleep, potty training, mealtimes, and discipline. I have taught my Discipline with Yes course to over 1000 families.
I also work with parents to heal their past so they’re better able to regulate and be calm and confident every day with their children. I’m most proud of the impact I have on families. Years after working with me, parents remember the positive impact of working with me. I’m proud that parents come back again and again over the years because they know they will get high-quality effective support.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m excited about training more professionals in my approach and philosophy around sleep. While I have already trained a few professionals who now have thriving sleep consulting business, I’m excited to be creating a certification program for sleep professionals. These professionals will have my backing as I will be confident in their skills and knowledge.
I have a new podcast called Pee Your Pants podcast with an amazing pelvic floor PT. We discuss and cover all the P’s: pregnancy, postpartum, pelvic floors, and parenting.
