Check Out Emily Fout’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Fout.

Emily Fout

Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Emily Fout and I am the owner of Fout Jewelry Design. As a third-generation builder, I spent my early years learning from my father in his woodworking studio in a small mountain town in the Rockies. It was at his workbench that I discovered the joy of creating work out of raw materials.

When I was nine years old, I began making jewelry. My parents took my interest seriously and brought me into the local bead shop where I met my mentor who hired me to work for her. She would take me on buying trips where I learned to foster relationships with gem cutters that I still work with to this day.

I then started my first company, Fizzy Love Jewelry, which took me to craft fairs and local farmer’s markets across Colorado. After many years of making and selling jewelry, I took a step toward my future and attended gemology school at The Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

Soon after graduating from GIA, it was time to evolve my company and hone my passion for one-of-a-kind pieces. When it came to designing a logo, I knew my father’s handwriting would capture the essence of Fout Jewelry Design: a legacy of hand-built art, inspired by the rhythms of nature and the natural beauty of the mountains.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a long and wonderful path. I feel like I have been creating since a very young age and yet, I am just at the beginning of the journey. Building a business is a rewarding process that has taken a lot of dedication, but I love spreading sparkle throughout the world. It is incredible to think that my jewelry is out there being worn and loved by someone every day. That magic feeling alone makes every challenge of running a business, worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Fout Jewelry Design was established in a small town nestled in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. It is a one-woman-run company that specializes in custom engagement rings and heirloom jewelry. I strive to build elegant unique pieces that can be worn every day.

I gather inspiration from the rhythms of the seasons and dependable splendor of Colorado where true beauty is the culture of the territory. I believe each of us is an original designer and am passionate about creating wearable art that helps you express your own unique original design. When you wear Fout Jewelry Design, I want you to feel empowered and beautiful—in raw, natural form.

I am most proud of the joy and sparkle I get to bring to people’s lives. I think that one of the most special parts about jewelry is that it’s the only thing we get to wear every day for years and then pass down. Jewelry is not just a luxury, it tells our story, holds memories, it is given in celebration of momentous accomplishments or to represent the love between two people. It’s a little bit of magic that outlives us.

It is hard to define what sets me apart, but I have never been too concerned with blending in. I have always done things in an alternative nature. As an independent jeweler, I take clients by appointment only. This means that when you design a custom piece of jewelry with me, you also get a customized experience.

Being a Gemologist gives me the ability to help you hand-pick the perfect gemstone or diamond that feels most like you. With Fout Jewelry Design, you get to create your story through custom jewelry.

How do you think about luck?
I feel very lucky to be where I am today, but I owe that luck to the support I’ve had throughout my entire journey. I have such encouraging loved ones and without them, I’m not sure Fout Jewelry Design would be the company it is, because I would not be the person I am today.

I may define myself as a one-woman-run company, but I am far from self-made. My success and determination to keep going on the tough or not-so-lucky days is because of the people I have in my corner. That to me, is the greatest luck a small business owner can have.
