Hidden Gems: Meet Michaela Farrer of The Moody June

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela Farrer.

Michaela Farrer

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
For as long as I can remember I’ve always loved fashion. In elementary school I used to sketch designs on the school bus and then into high school I’d plan outfits for weeks in advance. I’ve had a lot of different aesthetics over the years and it’s been fun experimenting with different styles. I’ve always had a dream of having my own boutique one day but it just never was the right time. After having my daughter in March of 2022 I knew I wanted to stay home with her but also wanted to have some sort of income but not just any job, I wanted it to be a passion project of sorts. In June of 2023 I decided this was my time to pursue the boutique and just took the leap! I officially opened in August 2023.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel like I’ve learned so much in such a short time. My biggest struggle I would say has been finding fashion that’s affordable. With social media it’s so easy to make comparisons to other people’s luxury and lives and I want people to be able to feel like they don’t have to go into debt trying to find their style. Everything in my boutique is under/around $100 and I think that’s a great price point for people. I spend hours and hours finding inventory that meets my criteria. Also as a new mom I really feel like I am finding my own personal style again so when it comes to purchasing inventory I always want to make sure whatever I have in the boutique is something I would personally wear and finding my style again has been a hard but rewarding challenge. <div>Online business in itself is hard especially with the changes social media outlets are constantly making so I’ve definitely had to adjust how I do things/originally planned to do things. I’m very fortunate for that though because it has opened me up to a whole new community of small business owners and the chance to meet customers face to face! </div>

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in women’s clothing and accessories. I think what sets me apart from others is I’m coming from the mindset of a mom. So often we are told that once we become mothers we have to dress more modest or “look like a mom” and I feel as though no matter what age or stage you are in your life you should look and feel your best. As someone who struggled with postpartum, opening the boutique and pursing my own interest really helped my mind space and confidence. That’s something I want to help other women with, whether they are in their 20s or in their 50s or beyond, I want to help them regain or continue to raise their confidence. I always hear women say “oh I don’t know where I’d wear this to” and I want to encourage women to dress for themselves, wear whatever you want and dress up if they want because life is too short to not. I’m proud of the community I feel like I’ve started to form and I know it’s only up from here. Although I am an online boutique, I take any opportunity to do vendor shows so women have the opportunity to try and see the clothes I have to offer. I will always be my customers biggest hype woman! I believe there is room for all of us to be our best selves.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Patience. Overnight success is not a thing for majority. It takes time, effort and thick skin to reach where we want to be. I’m not 100% where I want to be with my business but to be honest I don’t think I ever will be! 100% means your work is done and I don’t ever want to stop working towards something bigger. As well as comparison, your journey is never going to look like someone else’s but that what I’ve realized makes everyone business journey so special!

Pricing:

  • My pricing ranges from $0-$100
  • Down the road I’d like to have a Lux Collection with higher priced items but I want women to feel like they can afford my clothes as well.
