Community Highlights: Meet Denise Ery of Grow Girl Organics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Ery

Hi Denise, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Eight years ago, we stood on a patch of land that felt both daunting and full of potential. With a shared dream and a handful of seeds, we embarked on our journey as a farm, eager to cultivate not just crops, but a way of life.

Our first year was a whirlwind of excitement and uncertainty. We spent countless hours tilling the soil, planting our first crops, and learning the ropes of sustainable farming. We harvested our first vegetables—small but significant victories that fueled our passion.

As we established ourselves, we recognized the importance of community. We introduced organic herbs and flowers, which quickly became popular. It was heartwarming to see our hard work appreciated, and we forged friendships that would last for years.

From that initial leap of faith to becoming a beloved local farm, our journey has been filled with lessons, challenges, and triumphs. We’re proud to be part of a community that values sustainable agriculture and supports local farmers.

With each season, we continue to grow—not just our crops, but also our dreams for the future. We envision expanding our offerings and inspiring the next generation of farmers.

As we look ahead, we’re grateful for every challenge that shaped us and every success that propelled us forward. Here’s to many more seasons of growth, community, and the love of farming!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Unpredictable weather has often thrown us for a loop.

As we ventured into organic farming, we quickly learned that pests and diseases can be relentless. Early on, we faced significant challenges with infestations that threatened our crops. This pushed us to explore sustainable pest control methods, which required ongoing education and adaptation.

Starting a farm is financially demanding. There were times when we struggled with cash flow, especially after investing in equipment or infrastructure. Balancing costs while trying to maintain quality was a constant challenge, and we often had to make tough decisions to stay afloat.

While building a community around our farm was rewarding, it also required significant effort. We had to find creative ways to engage our customers and keep them coming back. Early on, we grappled with how to effectively market our produce and communicate our values to a broader audience.

There’s a steep learning curve in farming, and we’ve made our fair share of mistakes. From planting errors to misjudging market demand, each misstep was a learning opportunity that helped us grow, but it also came with its frustrations.

Despite these challenges, each struggle has shaped our farm into what it is today. We’ve learned to adapt, innovate, and rely on our community, which has made our successes even sweeter. The road may not always be smooth, but it’s the bumps along the way that have truly defined our journey.

What does success mean to you?
Success for us goes beyond just financial stability; it encompasses a holistic view of our impact on the community, the environment, and our own well-being. Here are some key aspects of how we define success:

Building strong relationships with our customers and neighbors is vital. Success means having a loyal community that supports us, engages with our farm, and shares in our mission of sustainable agriculture.

We measure success by our commitment to environmental stewardship. This includes maintaining healthy soil, conserving water, and minimizing our carbon footprint. When our farming practices benefit the planet, we feel we are on the right track.

Providing high-quality, fresh, and nutritious food is a top priority. Success means our produce is not only healthy but also brings joy and satisfaction to our customers.

For us, success is also about personal and team fulfillment. We strive for a work-life balance that allows us to enjoy our passion for farming while maintaining time for family, friends, and self-care.

We want to inspire and educate others about sustainable farming and the importance of local food systems. Success includes fostering a deeper understanding of where food comes from and how it affects our health and environment.

Success means continuously evolving our practices, whether that’s through new technology, crop diversification, or community outreach.

Finally, success is about resilience—how we bounce back from setbacks. Every challenge we’ve faced has strengthened our resolve and deepened our commitment to our vision.

In essence, success is a journey rather than a destination. It’s about creating a lasting, positive impact on our community and the environment while nurturing our passion for farming.
