Hidden Gems: Meet Britni Barber of Rise Performance and Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britni Barber

Hi Britni, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as a physical therapist doing travel physical therapy until Covid hit in 2020. I was in Boston, MA when Covid started and during that time I made the transition from working as a travel healthcare worker to taking a position with a company in the area. I was working less than a year in this new position before I realized how quickly I was burning out.

It was then that I started my professional instagram account as a way to re-connect with physical therapy in a way that felt fun to me and share my knowledge and expertise in the rehab field with others.

Not long after I started this account, I had a few people reach out to me for assistance in helping them manage pain and other movement limitations they were having specifically with activities like running, hiking or lifting weights in the gym. This is when I started my virtual wellness and performance coaching business in 2022, with an emphasis on bridging the gap between where traditional physical therapy leaves you and being back to fully participating in the activities you want to be doing again.

At the end of 2022, I moved cross country from Boston, MA to Denver, CO where I reside now. When I first moved to Denver I took a job with a mobile outpatient in the home physical therapy company who unfortunately after only four short months of being together laid me off due to low patient volume.

It was at this point where I knew I was at a crossroad. I could either go get another job with another outpatient clinic, knowing it would probably eventually lead to burn out again. Or I could build off of this online coaching business I was already growing.

I decided on the later, and began taking steps towards expanding Rise Performance and Physical Therapy to serve clients local to the Denver area in addition to continuing to grow my virtual wellness and performance coaching business that serves individuals all over the US.

What makes my Denver-based practices different is that I use a hybrid physical therapy model (combination of in-person sessions + digital support/coaching) to support active adults who want a comprehensive approach to long term pain management. Through this model I am able to help my clients unlock true movement freedom so they can effortlessly keep doing more of the things they love without setbacks or limitations.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is going to throw challenges your way, but I think the way we respond to these challenges says a lot more about who we are as people. Starting a business in a brand new city where I didn’t know anyone was definitely a challenge. I first looked at it as a big obstacle that could potentially slow me down or hold me back. However, I quickly reshaped my mindset around the situation realizing that Denver, CO has such an active community who values their health, fitness and ability to move without limitations. This city was filled with individuals who I knew needed and would benefit from my ability to support them. I found the best way overcome this obstacle was to start building genuine connections. And from this I now have a network of likeminded individuals I’ve built a sense of community with. Starting a business in Denver has given me the opportunity to meet some of my closest friends here.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
A lot of my childhood revolved around playing sports. When I was younger I tried almost every sport there was to try. I just loved being able to stay active, play sports and be part of a team. As I got older I got more serious about volleyball, basketball and track. I think this passion for sports and exercise is what eventually what led me to study exercise science and eventually go on to physical therapy school.

When I was younger I was also very shy and quiet. Which seems surprising to me because now I own a business and work in a field where I talk to new people every day. I would definitely consider myself now to be a very outgoing person.

All in all, I grew up around a very loving and supportive family. I think that’s what gave me the foundation and confidence to be someone who isn’t afraid to take risks and try new things in life. I know either way they’re always going to be behind me supporting me and cheering me on.
