Today we’d like to introduce you to Colton Corsetti
Colton, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story begins in March 2014, when I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and arrived on the Yellow Footprints at MCRD San Diego. Initially, I joined to become a Military Police (MP) officer, with plans to use the experience and free college as a stepping stone to becoming a Federal Agent. However, my path changed the moment I learned about K9 and the opportunity to work as a Military Working Dog Handler in the Marine Corps. What was supposed to be a stepping stone turned into a career—and a lifelong passion—because I fell in love with the mission and the bond between handlers and their dogs.
Growing up, I had a desire to serve my country, but after high school, I initially took a different route. A few years later, friends of mine were injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, and that experience rekindled my desire to serve. I wanted to make a difference, and when I discovered that K9 teams worked to find explosives and protect others from danger, I was hooked. It wasn’t just about service anymore—it was about purpose.
Becoming a Military Working Dog Handler wasn’t easy. Less than 1% of the U.S. population serves in the military, and only a small fraction join the Marine Corps. Of that fraction, an even smaller percentage become dog handlers. The process was highly competitive, but I was determined. While stationed in Iwakuni, Japan, I competed in and won a rigorous tryout for K9 selection. From there, I attended the 3-month Basic Handlers Course at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, where I became a certified Military Working Dog Handler. That experience launched me into a career I’ve dedicated myself to ever since.
A few years later, I deployed to Syria, where I saw firsthand the incredible impact that dogs can have on morale. In an environment filled with stress and uncertainty, dogs provided a unique and irreplaceable source of comfort and connection. Witnessing their ability to lift spirits while continuing to serve their mission reminded me of the deep, DNA-locked bond between humans and dogs. It’s a bond forged through millennia, and one that continues to evolve and strengthen.
After four years as a handler, I found myself back at Lackland Air Force Base—but this time as an instructor and trainer. Teaching in the Basic Handlers Course was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I had the privilege of training, teaching, and certifying members of every branch of the Department of Defense, as well as handlers from local civilian departments and foreign nations. Helping students grow and excel in this demanding field brought me immense joy and solidified my passion for teaching and instructing. Knowing that I played a part in shaping the next generation of handlers was one of the most fulfilling aspects of my service.
Now, after 10 years of service, more than 10 specialized certifications, tens of thousands of hours of experience, service in multiple countries, and countless missions, I’m ready to bring my knowledge and passion to Colorado through my business, Corsetti K9.
Over the years, I’ve learned what it truly means to be part of a Dog Team. The bond between handler and dog is unlike anything else. Together, a handler and their dog can achieve extraordinary results—saving lives, protecting communities, and building trust. I’ve witnessed firsthand the capabilities of these teams under the most intense conditions, where the stakes were as high as people’s safety and lives. This has only deepened my belief in the power of a strong handler-dog connection and the effectiveness of proper training.
At Corsetti K9, I’m bringing my experience, passion, and the lessons I’ve learned from the military to help dog owners build the best teams possible with their dogs. I believe that every handler and dog can achieve greatness through trust, communication, and the right training.

Through Corsetti K9, I aim to help others experience the incredible capabilities of their dogs while fostering confidence, trust, and teamwork. My mission is not only to train dogs but to create handlers who can work with their dogs as a team, just like I’ve done for nearly a decade. I look forward to bringing that same level of expertise, passion, and success to every dog and handler I work with.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it’s been far from smooth. The journey has been more challenging than I ever could have imagined. The Military Working Dog community is a tight-knit and supportive family, but it’s also incredibly competitive. To earn deployments, schools, certifications, and unique opportunities like POTUS (President of the United States) missions, you have to constantly prove yourself as the best. It’s a competition against your peers to be the top team, have the best-trained dog, be in peak physical condition, and master all required tactics to be effective. The pressure is relentless.
As a business owner, the challenges have shifted but remain just as intense. Imposter syndrome is something I wrestle with. After nearly a decade of experience, multiple duty stations, specialized certifications, and even a combat deployment, I sometimes question myself. Do I really know what I’m doing? Can I truly help these clients and their dogs? How do I translate everything I’ve learned into methods that resonate with everyday dog owners?
On top of that, I’ve faced the emotional toll of the job. I’ve lost friends and dogs to training accidents, suicide, and vehicle crashes. These tragedies weigh heavy. The Marine Corps isn’t known for being easy, and that culture extends into the K9 community.
Despite the struggles, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors—giants in the industry—who have guided me, supported me, and helped me rise. They’ve shared their wisdom and lifted me up, blessing me with the opportunities and skills I’ve gained over the years. Transitioning from over a decade of active-duty service to civilian life and starting my own business has been one of the biggest challenges yet.
However, my support system has always been stronger than the obstacles I face. My belief in myself, the encouragement of those who’ve helped me, and my unwavering love for what I do keep me moving forward. Every challenge is worth it because of the joy and success I see when I help others connect with their dogs on a deeper level.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about Denver, Colorado, is that it truly has something for everyone. After traveling the world, living in different places, and experiencing countless cultures, Denver stands out as number one for me. The people, the atmosphere, and the diversity of experiences make it unmatched.
If you want solitude and an escape into nature, Colorado offers vast, beautiful wilderness where you can go months without seeing another soul. On the flip side, if you’re looking for top-tier entertainment—comedy clubs, nightclubs, incredible bars and restaurants, or professional sports—Denver has that too. The city is a melting pot, rich with culture and opportunities to connect with people from all walks of life.
As a transplant, I know I’m new to this incredible community, but I’m committed to earning my place and contributing to Denver’s greatness. I want to give back to this state and its people, helping better the community in any way I can.
As for what I like least, it’s hard to say because I genuinely admire so much about Denver and Colorado. If anything, it might just be how quickly it’s growing and the challenges that come with that growth. But even so, I’m grateful to be here and excited to be part of this community’s future.
