Today we’d like to introduce you to Milos Orlic
Hi Milos, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Well, I’ve always been interested in a lot of different things, and I love the idea of people pursuing their dreams. Even if it turns out to be a fantasy and/or a failure, there’s always valuable lessons to be learned. I believe you grow as a person as you progress on your journey, all while constantly getting out of your comfort zone. That being said, I started dabbling with the idea of trying to turn my passions into something palpable long time ago. Not necessarily for the sake of making a living off it, but just to give it a shot and see what happens. Because, as I said, that’s how you learn.
The first thing I decided to bring to life 6 years ago came from my passion for music, namely rock ‘n’ roll. I was going to a lot of shows here in Toronto, but felt like something was missing. Specifically, since I originate from Serbia and follow the music scene of the whole of former Yugoslavia, I came to a conclusion that the audience of my fellow ex-Yugoslavian immigrants in Canada was exposed to a relatively limited number of musicians and bands that are coming over for their mini tours in Canada and USA. I did some research and math on the viability of the idea before and decided it was worth a shot to try and organize some shows. And because everyone and everything is online now it was easy to find contacts for prospective clients. I reached out to some of them and lo and behold I got some replies. I was very open about my lack of experience but both bands I ended up working with turned out to be not only great artists but also fantastic human beings. They both appreciated my sincere approach and were willing to give me the opportunity. The first band I had over for a couple of shows was Galija from Serbia, one of the oldest and biggest bands in the area of former Yugoslavia. Absolute legends of rock music. That was in late 2019. Unfortunately, Covid hit shortly after that so I had to wait until early 2023 to host a unique punk folk band Brkovi from Croatia, a staple of the alternative scene over in former Yugoslavia. Another group of the best people you can possibly ever meet. Anyhow, while I was still waiting for Covid restrictions in 2022 to be lifted, I read a great book on bringing your ideas to life in form of a business and I got so fired up that I knew immediately I wanted to try and implement the concept, It revolves around physical products and since my other big passion aside from music is beer I had a vision of combining the two and creating something unique out of it. And that’s how Rock Beer Gear got started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think it’s ever smooth. The thing is that from the outside it all might seem simple and easy but in reality it’s full of different parts and challenges that you only see from the inside. The word I came to almost hate in the process is ‘just’. You just create a business, You just need a website. You just find a good manufacturer. And so on. And when you don’t know much about any of that stuff, and you’re trying to do it all by yourself while also trying to juggle your everyday work and family life it takes time, effort and a lot of patience. Every little step turns into a whole bunch of tasks that you need to complete in order to be able to check that step off the list, For example, even a relatively simple thing like registering a company requires you to find an accountant that specializes in that particular type of business, study the regulations, fill out whole bunch of paperwork, come up with a name, open a business account, and so on and so forth… It all takes time, and it’s much more than you would expect.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Rock Beer Gear is here to bring together your love of beer and rock and roll. So far it’s just one product that has been put out but I’m definitely planning to have some more. The one that’s out there is the set of beer glasses that goes under the name of Magnificent 6. What separates these glasses from others on the market and the reason I’m very proud of them is the design of the characters on the glasses. They were all created by me, and were hand drawn (subsequently they were turned into digital files in order to be printed onto the glasses). The concept was to have a classic lineup of a band with the audience portrayed on the glasses, because that’s what the music is all about, and that’s also a big part of any beer aficionado’s life, to hang out with friends and enjoy the greatest beverage on the planet, preferably with some awesome music giving them a blast. In a sense it’s all about the spirit of camaraderie that connects beer and rock and roll. The glasses themselves are of the highest quality, very sturdy and durable. The print is safe for dishwashing and won’t peel or fade over time.
