Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharlynne Flores
Hi Sharlynne, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up I thought I’d always find myself with a career in healthcare. I finished my undergraduate with a Bachelors in Science, hoping to become a Pharmacist. I decided to take a gap year and realized I wanted a career that would allow me more freedom. I’ve always been fond of entrepreneurship and finance. However, people always told me it was not for me as I’ve always been pretty shy. After taking a gap year, I decided I didn’t care what other people’s opinions were of me and went back to school for Accounting. I decided to focus on tax accounting and eventually landed a job as an Admin for a CPA firm in Portland. As I was getting my Post-Bac, I slowly moved my way into a Senior Tax Accountant position. I started freelancing, but eventually failed because I just wasn’t prepared for all the hardships of entrepreneurship. My experience eventually led me to Denver where I decided I would take the leap and try again. Not just to achieve my dreams of entrepreneurship, but to also take control of my own time so that I can be more present for my daughter.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been an absolute roller coaster. I tried starting a couple years back. I had the knowledge and skill to do tax and accounting. But when it came to the logistics of running a business, I was completely clueless. I freelanced for about a year before completely giving up. I decided to try again in January. I’ve always worked for small firms and that allowed me to learn how to run a business. I was very hands-on with everything in the office and tried to take in as much as I could about business management. I’m much more prepared now and it definitely feels smoother. I’m more confident in my abilities and skills.
As you know, we’re big fans of JG Tax & Accounting. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
JG Tax and Accounting focuses on tax and accounting services for individuals and small businesses. When I started, my goal was to make professional accounting services accessible. I think everyone, especially small businesses, are deserving of someone that can help them succeed. I want to be that person for people who also have the same dreams of entrepreneurship and financial freedom as me. I want to focus on quality and not quantity. While a lot of accounting firms may take in as many clients as they can, I like to make sure I’m a good fit for my clients. Taxes can be daunting, and I don’t want to add extra stress to a client if we don’t mesh well together. While I like to maintain a sense of professionalism, I also like to make sure that my clients know exactly who they’re working with. I’m not shy about sharing my life and I believe that helps build more trust. It’s also what allows me to care so much about my clients and their needs.
How do you think about happiness?
My daughter makes me happy. I know it sounds corny, but she motivates me to live life to the fullest. I’ve learned to enjoy the little things because of her.
