Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Champion
Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For 18 years, I have taught photography and graphic design, helping students develop their artistic voices while building a foundation in visual storytelling. My background in marketing and design always gave me a deep appreciation for the power of branding, but for most of my career, I stayed within the structure of education—until life forced me to pivot.
In 2022, a financial crisis shattered my stability. A perfect storm of medical and housing failures left me owing over $50,000 in a single month. To survive, I took on multiple jobs—teaching, alcohol vending, photography, and social media marketing—working nonstop just to stay afloat. At the same time, I was battling lifelong struggles with mental health, trauma, and a deep sense of burnout.
Amidst the chaos, I discovered neurofeedback, a brain-training technology I had first read about in Dr. Daniel Amen’s work. At my lowest point, it felt like a last resort—my final shot at regaining clarity and control over my mind. The transformation was profound. Neurofeedback helped me rewire patterns of fear, self-doubt, and overwhelm, giving me the mental resilience to not only survive but to build something new. It wasn’t just about overcoming challenges—it was about reclaiming my creativity, confidence, and ability to build a future I truly wanted.
Over the past two years, I’ve turned my creative skills into a growing business. My photography and social media management company has allowed me to work with restaurants, retail brands, and businesses looking to elevate their digital presence. I specialize in creating visually compelling content that not only tells a brand’s story but also drives engagement and growth. Through strategic social media management, I’ve helped businesses build authentic online communities, increase customer engagement, and drive measurable results.
My approach goes beyond aesthetics—I focus on creating a digital presence that aligns with each brand’s identity and business goals. Whether it’s through curated photography, content strategy, or engagement tactics, I help businesses stand out in an increasingly competitive digital space. My work with restaurants, in particular, has been especially fulfilling, allowing me to merge my love for storytelling with the vibrant energy of the food industry.
While I continue to teach, I am also expanding my business and taking on new creative opportunities. One of my most exciting ventures is launching The Wild Pivot, a podcast that will explore neurofeedback, entrepreneurship, life pivots, and resilience. My goal is not to practice neurofeedback, but to make it more accessible—helping others understand what it is, how to find it, and how it can be a game-changer in rewiring the brain for success. I’ll also dive into personal reinvention, sharing my own experiences and those of others who have navigated major career and life shifts.
My journey has been anything but linear, but every challenge has led me to something greater. I’m still teaching, still expanding my business, and still balancing multiple roles, but I now see each of these as part of a larger path forward. Through creativity, resilience, and reinvention, I’ve proven to myself that change isn’t just possible—it’s powerful. And my goal is to help others find that same sense of possibility in their own lives.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. My journey has been anything but smooth—it has been a winding, uphill climb full of financial crises, burnout, self-doubt, and the kind of relentless hustle that forces you to dig deep and redefine your limits.
In 2022, my life completely unraveled. A perfect storm of medical issues and housing failures left me with over $50,000 in unexpected debt in a single month. It wasn’t just a financial hit—it was an emotional and mental breaking point. I had to find a way to survive, so I took on multiple jobs, working nearly around the clock between teaching, alcohol vending, photography, and social media management. I went from having a stable (if exhausting) career in education to juggling four jobs just to keep my head above water.
At the same time, I was struggling with my mental health in ways I didn’t fully understand. For years, I had been misdiagnosed with anxiety, OCD, and depression, but nothing ever seemed to fit. It wasn’t until I started neurofeedback in 2020 after I had a brain scan, that I learned I actually had ADHD and an old partially healed concussion—something that completely reframed how I understood my own brain and why certain things had always felt so difficult. I had first read about neurofeedback right before I began it, and at the time, I was desperate. It felt like my last option, and to my surprise, it worked. It wasn’t a quick fix, but it was the first thing that actually changed the way my brain functioned, helping me break free from cycles of overwhelm and exhaustion. It gave me the clarity and energy to start making real changes instead of constantly trying to keep up.
Building my photography and social media business hasn’t been easy either. I’ve had to navigate imposter syndrome, set pricing that reflects my value, and learn how to balance my creative work with the practical side of running a business. I love helping brands tell their stories visually, but entrepreneurship requires wearing so many hats—sales, marketing, admin, strategy—and learning to manage it all has been a challenge. My work, especially with restaurants and retail brands, has been fulfilling, but scaling and maintaining a steady client base while balancing everything else has been a constant learning experience.
On top of that, teaching remains a massive part of my life. It’s something I’ve done for 18 years, and while I love working with students, it’s a high-demand job that requires an enormous amount of energy. Balancing that with growing my business and launching The Wild Pivot podcast has been a constant juggling act.
But through all of it, I’ve learned resilience in a way I never imagined. Every challenge has forced me to grow, shift, and refine my vision. While the road hasn’t been smooth, it has led me to something greater—more clarity, more alignment, and a deeper understanding of what I truly want to build in this next phase of my life. I’ve learned that reinvention is always possible, and now, through my business and podcast, I hope to help others find their own way forward, no matter how uncertain the path may seem.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a photographer, social media strategist, and educator with a deep passion for visual storytelling and digital growth. My work revolves around helping businesses—particularly in the restaurant and retail industries—create compelling content and build strong, authentic brands online. I specialize in photography, content strategy, and social media management, offering a personal, results-driven approach that goes beyond just posting photos.
What I Do & Specialties
Photography – I create high-quality, engaging visual content that helps businesses showcase their brand, whether it’s food photography, lifestyle branding, or retail campaigns.
Social Media Management – I help businesses grow their online presence through strategic content, audience engagement, and platform optimization. My approach isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about storytelling, strategy, and real, measurable growth.
Teaching & Mentorship – For 18 years, I have taught photography and graphic design, empowering students to develop their artistic voices and technical skills. Teaching has shaped my ability to communicate ideas clearly, foster creativity, and inspire others to take action.
What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m incredibly proud of the impact I’ve had on the businesses I work with. Seeing my clients grow their brands, reach new customers, and thrive in a competitive market is what drives me.
I’m also proud of my ability to pivot and build a career that integrates my creative passions with real business impact. Starting a business after years in education was intimidating, but I’ve been able to grow something meaningful while still teaching—a balance that many creatives struggle to achieve.
What Sets Me Apart
Personal, Hands-On Approach – I don’t just offer social media management or photography; I take the time to understand my clients’ brand, voice, and goals, ensuring every piece of content aligns with their vision.
Strategic Creativity – Many photographers focus purely on visuals, and many social media managers focus purely on analytics—I merge the two. My background in both photography and marketing allows me to create content that is not only visually compelling but also strategically designed to drive engagement.
Resilience & Adaptability – I’ve built my business while balancing multiple jobs, overcoming financial crises, and navigating major personal shifts. That adaptability and problem-solving mindset allow me to help businesses grow even in uncertain times.
Now, I’m expanding my work by launching The Wild Pivot, a podcast that explores neurofeedback, entrepreneurship, life pivots, and resilience. My goal is to help others discover alternative ways to heal, grow, and reinvent themselves—just as I have.
At the core of everything I do, whether through photography, social media strategy, or my podcast, is the belief that transformation is always possible—for brands, for businesses, and for people.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the past few years, it’s that reinvention is always possible. Life doesn’t always go the way we expect, and sometimes the biggest setbacks are actually opening doors we never would have considered. My journey—from teaching for nearly two decades to launching a business and now a podcast—has been anything but traditional, but it has shown me that we are always capable of more than we think.
For anyone feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of what’s next, I want to say: you’re not alone. Whether it’s through creative work, entrepreneurship, or personal growth, there is always a way forward. Sometimes, it just takes a shift in perspective, a new tool, or the right support system to help you see it.
I’m excited to continue expanding my photography and social media business, helping brands tell their stories in a way that truly connects with their audience. And with The Wild Pivot, I hope to create a space where people can discover new ways to navigate change, build resilience, and take ownership of their own reinvention.
If you’re curious about my work or just want to connect, I’d love to hear from you. Creativity, strategy, and transformation are at the heart of everything I do, and I’m always looking to collaborate with people who share that passion.
