Rising Stars: Meet Steve Olguin of Northglenn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Olguin.

Hi Steve, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From Facebook Group to Lifeline: The Story of Bright Leaf Seniors

In 2023, a simple Support group sparked a movement. When Steve created Bright Leaf Seniors, his goal was straightforward—help older adults navigate the complexities of home repairs and maintenance, particularly when financial barriers made it impossible for them to do so. The online community quickly became a space for seniors to seek advice, share resources, and support one another.

Yet, as the requests for help mounted, it became clear that guidance alone was not enough. Seniors across Northglenn—and soon beyond—were facing urgent housing issues, unable to afford critical repairs. Realizing the gravity of the need, Steve transformed his Support group into a nonprofit organization, Bright Leaf Senior Resources, dedicated to providing direct assistance to those who had nowhere else to turn.

Since its transition, Bright Leaf has expanded its reach throughout Colorado, assembling over 30 volunteers and forming key partnerships with local businesses and community organizations. The team has tackled a range of urgent repairs, from fixing dangerous home conditions to installing accessibility features for those struggling with mobility.

Recently, a social media post asking seniors in need to reach out led to a wave of heartbreaking responses. Each story was unique—each senior’s struggle a testament to the dire need for support. It was a powerful moment of realization: the demand far exceeded what Bright Leaf alone could handle.

Now, Steve and Bright Leaf Senior Resources are calling on the community to rally behind their mission. The nonprofit is looking for additional funding, volunteers, and support from local businesses to ensure that no senior is left without the help they deserve.

In just a few short years, a simple idea evolved into a critical lifeline for Colorado’s aging population. The work is far from over—but with the right support, the impact of Bright Leaf Seniors will continue to grow.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Bright Leaf Seniors Faces Growing Challenges Amid Rising Costs and Increased Demand

What started as a grassroots effort to support seniors with home repairs has now become a vital lifeline for many across Colorado. Yet, as Bright Leaf Senior Resources expands its impact, the organization is facing mounting obstacles—chief among them, securing funding and volunteers to meet the growing demand.

For Bright Leaf, the mission is clear: ensure that seniors in need are safe and comfortable in their homes. But executing that mission has become increasingly difficult. The cost of building materials has skyrocketed, stretching the nonprofit’s budget thin and limiting the number of homes they can assist.

The strain is evident. Requests from seniors continue to pour in—many unable to afford basic home repairs, living in unsafe conditions, and finding no alternative resources elsewhere. While the volunteer base has grown to over 20 individuals, it’s still not enough. More hands are needed to complete repairs efficiently and reach as many seniors as possible.

One recent social media post asking seniors in need to reach out garnered an overwhelming response. Each story was unique, each need urgent. But with limited funding, Bright Leaf must carefully balance available resources with the heartbreaking reality that some seniors may go without help simply because funds aren’t available.

From Construction to Compassion: How Steve Olguin’s Journey Led to Bright Leaf Seniors

For years, Steve Olguin built homes, managed projects, and oversaw construction sites, ensuring that families had safe places to live. But it wasn’t until he took a role as Director of Maintenance at a memory care facility that he truly grasped the heartbreaking reality many seniors face.

Inside those halls, Steve saw more than just routine maintenance work. He witnessed elderly residents who had once lived independently—who had owned homes, built lives, and contributed to their communities—forced to relocate because they could no longer maintain their homes. Many had been left with no other option, lacking the financial resources, physical ability, or support necessary to stay in the places they called home for decades.

The consequences were staggering. Seniors moved into care facilities, where costs often doubled or even tripled what they had previously paid for rent or a mortgage. The financial burden became suffocating, forcing many into a system they never wanted to be part of simply because help was out of reach.

Seeing this cycle unfold time and time again, Steve knew something had to change. If seniors had the resources and support to maintain their homes, many would never have to leave. This realization became the foundation of his next mission—Bright Leaf Senior Resources.

What started as a simple Facebook group offering advice and resources on home repairs quickly evolved into a nonprofit with an expanding team of volunteers and community partnerships. Bright Leaf was built on the belief that no senior should have to leave their home simply because they lack the means to maintain it. Through free or affordable home repairs, accessibility modifications, and community-driven support, the organization has helped countless seniors across Northglenn and beyond remain in their homes, preserving both their independence and financial stability.

Today, Bright Leaf Seniors continues to grow, but funding and volunteer support remain an ongoing challenge. As the demand for assistance increases, Steve and his team are calling on the community to help ensure no senior is left behind.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Despite never having the chance to meet his own grandparents, Steve Olguin has dedicated his life to ensuring that seniors receive the respect, support, and care they deserve. His passion for helping older adults isn’t rooted in personal family experiences but in the countless stories he has witnessed—stories of seniors struggling to maintain their homes, facing isolation, and often feeling forgotten by the world around them. Instead of letting that disconnect define him, Steve turned it into a driving force, building Bright Leaf Senior Resources to serve as a safety net for those who might otherwise slip through the cracks. For Steve, it’s not just about home repairs—it’s about restoring dignity, providing security, and ensuring that no senior is left behind simply because help is out of reach.
