Hidden Gems: Meet Mike Piche” of Piche Architecture

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Piche”.

Hi Mike, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Boulder, and this place has always been a source of inspiration for me. The natural beauty, the creative spirit, and the connection to the outdoors have shaped who I am—both personally and professionally.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design from the University of Colorado, then headed to Aspen. There, I worked at a local modern architecture firm, where I began to truly understand the power of design rooted in nature. That experience deepened my appreciation for how buildings can quietly reflect and complement the landscapes they inhabit.

I later pursued a Master’s in Architecture at the University of Michigan, where I was immersed in an environment that valued creative problem-solving, intellectual rigor, and precision in execution. The program emphasized not just design excellence, but a commitment to questioning conventions and exploring new possibilities. That experience helped shape how I think, design, and collaborate today.

For many years, I served as a Principal at Studio B Architecture and Interiors, working in the Aspen studio. In 2014, I returned to Boulder to establish and lead a second location. That role gave me the opportunity to help shape the firm’s creative direction and expand the reach of modern design rooted in nature.

In 2024, I founded Piché Architecture to return to a more personal approach—one where I can work closely with clients and reconnect with the aspects of design I find most meaningful. For me, architecture has always been about more than just aesthetics. It’s about listening deeply, building relationships, and creating beautiful, functional spaces that reflect the unique rhythms of people’s lives and the places they inhabit.

I especially enjoy working with clients who share my love of nature and the outdoors—those who want their homes or spaces to feel both grounded and expansive. That shared sensibility often leads to the most rewarding collaborations.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Launching Piché Architecture has been incredibly rewarding, but it hasn’t come without its challenges. Starting a new design practice means wearing many hats—I’m not just the architect, but also the marketer, project manager, accountant, and sometimes even the office IT support. Balancing all these roles requires a lot of energy and flexibility.

There are moments of self-doubt, too. Questioning whether I’m making the right decisions or if I can meet the expectations I’ve set for myself and my clients is part of the journey. Managing those feelings and staying focused on my vision is a constant but necessary process.

Despite these hurdles, every challenge also brings growth and opportunity. It’s exciting to build something that truly reflects my values and allows me to collaborate closely with clients. The lessons I’m learning along the way are shaping me into a more resilient and thoughtful architect.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Piche Architecture?
Starting my own architectural firm after years at an established design practice has given me a strong foundation to build on. I bring a history of modern residential design excellence and have worked on many notable homes throughout my career—projects that have helped shape communities and push design forward.

This experience also gives me a deep understanding of the entire process, from early concept through construction. Residential design, especially at a high level, comes with many nuances and potential pitfalls. My role is to help clients navigate those challenges with clarity and confidence—whether it’s working through site constraints, navigating approvals, or managing the complexity of construction.

My focus is on creating thoughtful, enduring modern homes that reflect each client’s lifestyle and values. I care deeply about design quality and attention to detail, and I’m proud to bring a level of rigor and refinement to every project.
For me, architecture is more than design—it’s a partnership rooted in collaboration, integrity, and a shared vision for something exceptional.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Alongside my architectural work, I’ve always stayed connected to the arts. I previously served on the boards of the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and the University of Colorado Art Museum. These roles have been invaluable—not only in deepening my appreciation for creative expression but also in helping me build meaningful connections within the local community. Engaging with diverse artists, patrons, and cultural leaders has broadened my perspective and enriched my understanding of how art and design intersect with everyday life. My participation has enabled me to collaborate more effectively, source inspiration, and stay attuned to the values and interests of the people and places I serve. Supporting the arts continues to be a passion that inspires and fuels my creativity.
