Inspiring Conversations with Kristy Barr of KBarr Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Barr.

Hi Kristy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve worked in Denver for the past 8 years and in 2024 realized that I was ready to branch off into my own private practice in Golden. Since I’ve been a therapist I have always been drawn to working with teens, young adults, and families. I wanted to take on a new adventure doing this under my own name. From the moment I started dreaming of opening my own business so much creativity was sparked in me. This led me to really highlighting one of my passions – rock climbing. Now Therapeutic Rock Climbing is probably one of my most requested services. The funny thing is, I never really thought I would get to this place of working for myself, but now I’ve experienced the freedom and flexibility of owning a small business- it’s almost like a dream come true.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think my biggest obstacle has been my own self-limiting beliefs. We are all our worst critics and out of fear of failing, that really stopped me from stepping into my own. Once I stopped letting those beliefs stop me and just walked along side them, I eventually got enough evidence that was stronger than those old beliefs, so I was able to create new ones!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am in the business of helping my clients learn, heal, and grow so they can live more fulfilling lives. It’s literally my tagline! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Colorado and I specialize working with people ages 11+. I see many people who are dealing with neurodiversity (ASD/ADHD/OCD), anxiety, depression, executive functioning challenges, isolation and so much more. I mean, we all are a bit complex if you think about it. But truly what I love doing is getting people excited about their healing and that it doesn’t have to be stereotypical “hard work”, but they can enjoy the process through their own learning.
Something that I think sets me apart from others is that not only am I interested in your classical idea of therapy, but I love utilizing rock climbing, experiential activities, EMDR, and other somatic experiences in session.
And I can’t stop there, I’ve also created networking groups with professionals in the area. I think this is another area I feel proud of- I wanted to be a safe place that people in the community could come and connect with personally or professionally, because we are all really in this together. My networking event Golden Hour is that place and I’m excited to see how much that has even grown since March of 2025.
I think what I would want people to know most about my brand is that it’s authentic. I can’t help but be fully myself and I hope that people can take comfort in that they are getting to know the real me.
For my offerings, I hope people can walk away with learning that therapy doesn’t have to be what it’s looked like in the past, but engaging our bodies in the process is what really creates sustainable change.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I love meeting up with professionals for a cup of coffee or going for a walk! I am always looking to partner with people to host events around the area that can offer professionals or just people in the community a time to come together and be human.
I also have a newsletter that I send out monthly, so I love posting what others have coming up – not just my own happenings.

If you know someone or are that someone that wants a different style of therapy – I’m your lady! I’m happy to do free consultations to see if I’m a good fit for you.
