Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer James.
Hi Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved a lot growing up. Between Denver’s bussing program in the 80s and 90s and my dad’s career, I went to eight different schools from kindergarten through high school. I remember tagging along when my parents were house-hunting, running through every room and calling dibs on the primary bedroom every single time. I wanted to be just like their Realtor, Lana Dardano.
By the time we moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 9th grade, making friends and jumping into new situations was second nature. I stayed busy with softball, tried tennis for a bit, took up golf my senior year because I figured businesswomen should know how to play with executives. I played violin in orchestra, joined choir because my friends were there, helped with costumes for theatre when I didn’t get cast, and was editor-in-chief of the school paper. I liked meeting people from every corner of the social map.
In 2002, I was 21 and had just moved out when my parents decided to head back to Colorado. I was in a lease with my boyfriend, so I stayed behind and helped them get their house ready to sell. That 6th grade dream about real estate came flooding back. At the time, I was working in hospital pharmacy and taking what was supposed to be a one-year break from college that had already stretched into two. I asked their agent a million questions—what do you love about real estate, how did you start, how much do you make? I met with a brokerage but they told me I was too young and needed six months of living expenses saved before making the leap. Smart advice, but it stung.
In 2003, I moved to Miami for an adventure, kept working in pharmacy, and in February 2004 I got my real estate license at 23. I juggled both jobs until 2006 when I went all in. By 2009, I was the broker and office manager for 110 agents. I loved it. Helping people buy their first home, sell after a loss, or finally move on to a new chapter never got old.
In 2009, I came back to Colorado and started over. I worked my way from office admin to managing broker of a Cherry Creek firm with more than 100 agents in seven years. I loved coaching agents, but the company’s non-compete meant I couldn’t sell—and I missed it. In 2017, I went back to full-time sales. I joined a team in Olde Town Arvada, started my own team in 2018, and in 2022 I opened my own brokerage, Jen James Real Estate. Around the same time, I partnered with Colleen Kelley to launch Differential Coaching. Now I get to sell homes and coach other business owners, which is the perfect mix for me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s never been smooth. Being told I was “too young” and didn’t have enough money to start was hard to hear, especially when the dream was fresh in my mind. It taught me early on to be prepared financially and mentally for big moves.
The 2008 market crash was another curveball. I had to pivot fast. A major life change meant moving back to Colorado and rebuilding both personally and professionally.
As a managing broker, I hit a wall with burnout. Coaching was rewarding, but not being able to sell my own real estate felt like watching from the sidelines. Leaving a steady leadership role to start over in sales was scary, but I knew I needed to get back to the part of the business that lit me up.
Every tough spot ended up making me sharper, more creative, and more determined to keep going.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Jen James Real Estate?
Jen James Real Estate is my own boutique brokerage built on relationships, not transactions. I help clients buy, sell, and invest in residential real estate across Colorado, with a focus on building generational wealth and long-term value.
What makes me different:
Relationships first. Many of my clients become friends, and I’m still there to celebrate their milestones years after closing. Invites to weddings and throwing housewarming parties and baby showers is not uncommon. Haha!
Full service from start to finish. Every seller’s home is professionally staged, included in my fee, and I handle strategy, marketing, negotiations, and pride myself on being a resource even after the move.
True local knowledge. Especially in and around Arvada, I know the neighborhoods, the people, and the hidden gems.
What I’m most proud of is that my clients trust me to tell them the truth, even when it’s not what they want to hear. That’s how you build a brand that lasts.
Alongside the brokerage, I co-own Differential Coaching with Colleen Kelley. We work with real estate agents and executives to help them build profitable, sustainable businesses they’re proud of.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Have money in the bank before you start. That six months of expenses advice I got when I was 21 still holds up.
Ask questions and learn from everyone. Watch how the pros handle both wins and losses.
Focus on people, not just deals. Your reputation will carry you farther than any single transaction.
Be willing to pivot. Markets, tools, and trends change constantly.
Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.
