We recently had the chance to connect with Maria Angel and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Maria, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I just had my beautiful baby boy and having him next to me everyday, has brought so much joy. I enjoy everyday a lot more and take everything slower so I can take advantage of every second I have next to him.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Maria Jose but I go by Majo. Now, my own brand is called Beleza by Majo, and I never thought I could have my own brand.
I am 23 years old and a new mom to my 3 month old baby. I started my brand because I wanted people to know my work and also get to know me. I do hair, from haircuts and color to hairstyles. But if there is something I love the most out of the industry, is bridal hair. The joy of sharing such an important day with a bride and making her feel beautiful, it has no comparison.
I am currently working on getting my name and my brand out to the world and letting everybody know how good I am on what I do, but also letting them know that I am in a constant growth mindset. I would love to be able to own my own studio and that is the exact path I am currently taking.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mom has been my biggest supporter, no matter what I do or how many times I change my mind. She has been there for me since the beginning of times and is the person who uplifts me.
I did not know I wanted to be in the beauty industry, but since I was a little girl I loved doing my grandmas hair, everybody’s nails and my own hair; but never thought of it as a career.
But one day, when I was lost and did not know what I wanted to do with my life, my mom helped me pick the right path and here I am, sharing my story and working towards my future as a hairstylist.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Do not be so hard on yourself and do not push yourself to do something that you do not want.
Choose what makes you happy, it does not matter how long it takes and it does not matter if someone around you is not happy with your decision. Just allow yourself to grow and learn but while truly doing what you love.
If you keep paying attention to what everybody says about you, you will never be happy.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Sadly, beauty industry is full of competition, and just because of that we tend to not support each other and instead we talk about other’s failures. There is plenty of people for each one of us, and it is not so hard to support each other’s business and success.
We do not need to feel like we are on top of everyone and we are the best if we are doing it while stepping on others dreams.
We should be proud of each other and be grateful to be part of such powerful industry.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
I will regret not risking more. Things have happened while I am trying to grow and learn from others and the disappointment it has taken from me towards those who “were teaching me and rooting for me” has stopped me from risking more.
I could have been in such a bigger place and position in my life if it was not for the fear they have created in me and the industry I am now part of.
