Stephanie Lauredent-Diasio of North Denver on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Stephanie Lauredent-Diasio shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Stephanie, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
My business involves a lot of childbirth education, planning and birth prep with clients. We often talk about the importance of trusting your body and being flexible with the process of labor itself. We also talk about advocacy so that they can confidently enter their birth.

When it comes to birth, there are so many elements that can be unpredictable – when someone goes into labor and how, being a big piece of that.

As a doula, being on call becomes a way of life during the third trimester. This often entails being available to provide support for labor which can take place anywhere between two weeks before someone’s estimated due date and two weeks after their estimated due date.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Stephanie Lauredent-Diasio, Founder of That Black Doula and Ti Goute and our mission revolves around supporting women in birth and postpartum through personalized support both in person and virtually.

We recently launched a reproductive snack line called Ti Goute, which means “little bite” in Haitian Creole that crafts small nourishing treats designed for every season of womanhood. Join the waitlist for snack drops at tigoutesnacks.com!

We support families so they can enter labor and postpartum with confidence by guiding them step by step so that they can trust themselves and their decisions while taking the guesswork out of it all.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My dad saw me clearly before I could see myself.

Every goal of mine has been shared with him and his belief in me pushes me to aim higher and keep going.

From dreams of writing a book, becoming a yoga instructor and ultimately creating my business as a doula supporting families, my dad is always one of the first people to support my vision.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I have a few defining wounds that come to mind, especially in the context of working in the corporate world.

Experiencing workplace trauma and racism as the only Black person at work, several times rewired the way I approached work.

I realized that I needed to establish better boundaries with work and leave places that were toxic. Rather than staying in environments that made me sick, for the sake of a paycheck, I chose to lean into entrepreneurship.

Ultimately, therapy, having creative outlets and doing work to regulate my nervous system were healing and key for me when I made the decision to start my business.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They would say that supporting others and making a positive impact in people’s lives really matters to me.

I always try to do what I can to leave a situation better than I found it. I love to help solve a problem, and do so while adding a bit of humor in there as well.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Years ago, I got a promotion for my “dream job” with my dream company to work with. I was over the moon until I had to work with a micromanager. Then I noticed that the goalpost moved to the next thing I needed to achieve for myself.

I didn’t really give myself time to savor the accomplishment. Which is a recipe for burnout and overworking.
