We recently had the chance to connect with Jessica Dory and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Saying yes to trying new things! My kids are now 7, 9 and 18 and I finally have a bit more bandwidth and ability to go and do things that were challenging with young children just a few years ago. It’s easy to get caught up in routine and caregiving, but I recently made a conscious decision to say yes to more invitations and opportunities and it has been a really fun practice.
I feel brave for going outside my comfort zone and that transfers over to other parts of my life. For instance I recently said yes to a full day boat trip without my family and had the opportunity to jump off a cliff and I did and it was a blast!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Denver area photographer who specializes in lifestyle and documentary newborn, maternity and family sessions. I also have my own photography studio , Little Rabbit, were I focus on children’s milestones and cake smash sessions as well as newborn and themed mini sessions throughout the year. This is my 6th year doing this and I absolutely love working with my clients and it’s so much to see the kids grow over the years.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child I was labeled as “shy” and that became a big part of my identity. It was a challenge over the years to redefine what that actually meant for me. Looking back I believe I was a deeply sensitive and creative child. I believe my work as a creative and visual storyteller abilities pull from my ability to observe and document the moments in an artistic way that authentically captures the moment and the people within it . As an adult I still feel quiet at times but I also love to meet and engage with new people and thrive in community.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I think along with the label and experience of shyness came a fear of being seen and of presenting my voice to the world. As a visual artist this has been challenging as my work must be seen in order to be found. I can also be a perfectionist so the fear of being seen along with not being “perfect” has been an obstacle for me. It’s one I am still working through.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Since I was a child I have always been mesmerized by the stars and the idea of the universe. I always wondered about where humans came from and where we went when we died. I grew up going to a Christian Methodist church and although I appreciated the Bible stories and moral values about how we should treat each other a lot of religion never fully resonated for me.
That being said I think it is nothing short of a miracle that we are here on planet Earth. I do believe we are spiritual beings having a physical experience and that we are intended to learn and grow through all our various experiences. I believe that love and awe are integral parts of being human. I have always felt a longing for a world where these feelings could be more fully realized. I believe the feeling of looking into a star filled sky takes one out the personal and into the collective experience. I wish we could all see the stars better from our houses.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I think I have been and will continue to regret not sharing my ideas, visions and imagery as fully as I could have. I hope to become more comfortable being seen and less content to hide in the shadows.
