We’re looking forward to introducing you to Melissa Rippy. Check out our conversation below.
Melissa, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Drinking coffee with my animals and riding my Peloton bike.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I entered into the insurance industry in 2002 and never left. I opened the Rippy Agency in November of 2013. In 2014 we were awarded Small Business of the Year, People’s Choice and in 2021 Small Business of the Year through the Greater Brighton Chamber of Commerce. We annually award a Brighton High School senior with a $1,000 scholarship. We also own and operate Elsie, the Little Free Mobile Library (a Little Free Library on wheels).
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad was a small business owner and I learned firsthand how to run my own small business. He was a hard worker who taught me about integrity, honesty and the importance of customer service.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Back in 2017, I felt like I was at the end of my financial rope. I sold my house to stay a small business owner and utilize the proceeds from my sale for operating expenses within my business. There was no guarantee that it would all work out, but fortunately, it did and I’m grateful to still be here to talk about it.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Owning a small business has been no easy feat, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices that impact our family and our personal lives, but the commitment I have to my clients is to be there when they need us most.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I think clients would miss having an agent that’s in their corner. I also think they’d miss the free pie we offer at Thanksgiving.
