Story & Lesson Highlights with Alana K.

We recently had the chance to connect with Alana K. and have shared our conversation below.

Alana, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Unplugging from the world and plugging into the music. Whether I’m listening to something or making something, it brings me a sense of peace.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey y’all, I’m Alana K a singer songwriter from Denver. I love to captivate audiences with my sultry vocals and lyrics that will put you right in the middle of the story. I’ve always believed that music is healing for both the listener and the creator, I’ve used it to help me through my depression either by listening or creating. Making music has helped me with my mental health and I love having the ability to help others through my music. If you need to heal or just fill your cup we can do it together through music.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I wasn’t enough while also feeling like I was too much. I get excited when I talk about things I love or when I’m learning about something else someone is passionate about. It’s a very contradictory way to think but it’s what I felt. Now I know I’m more than enough because I believe it and I don’t need someone else to validate it for me. I also know I’m not too much, I’m not afraid to take space and I’m not afraid to be me either.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely! There was a period of time where I really didn’t enjoy making music. I struggled to write, I had no interest in creating and really didn’t know if I wanted to continue pursuing music. One thing I had always heard was when you start making your passion into a job you slowly lose your love for it. I thought that time had come, it wasn’t helping me and making me feel good like it once had.

Then I started to pray about it, because I truly love singing and really didn’t want to stop. I knew I had so much more to give and the only way I knew how to get there was through God. Once I started my outlook on music evolved, I no longer wanted to pursue it solely as a job, but now as a means to heal the collective through the love of music.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
The Aloha Spirit. I was born in Hawaii and grew up on the mainland, my mothers family is from a small island of Hawaii. Even though I grew up landlocked I was taught the Aloha Spirit. To me it means everything you do is with love, you do everything out of the goodness of your heart, treat not only people but the earth and your soul kindly. It’s a choice we make everyday. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stand up for yourself but even when you do that you do it with compassion. It’s hard work but it’s worth all the energy.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
No one else knows how much or how little work I put in for myself and my business other than me. At the end of the day the only person who I need to praise me is me. I know how hard I work and I know what I had to give up to be able to pursue my passions. Don’t get me wrong being praised for my work would be great but I do this for me and my healing, I just hope it reaches someone else who needs it like I did no recognition needed, I’m just glad your still here.
