Susie Lynn shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Susie, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me starts around 6 a.m. with a shower and some semblance of “getting ready,” which usually just means looking presentable enough so I don’t scare the grocery store cashier later. At 6:30 I wake up my middle schooler, then at 8 it’s round two with my fourth grader. Once everyone is off to school, I run errands—usually groceries, because somehow we’re always out of milk, snacks, or the one thing I specifically told my kids not to eat.
After errands, I get to work on my blog. Some days that means creating Instagram or LTK posts, other days it’s writing. My husband works from home too, so we have lunch together, which is sweet… and also a great excuse to avoid leftovers I don’t want.
Afternoons are dedicated to sitting in multiple car lines (basically my part-time job), helping with homework if needed, then making dinner and spending the evening together as a family. Pretty basic, pretty boring… but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Well, except maybe the car lines. Definitely the car lines.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Susie, and I started my blog gracebeautyandfbombs.com back in 2019. I built it from scratch—like, me, my laptop, and a whole lot of Googling “how do I start a blog?” It’s been a slow build, but honestly that’s probably for the best because I had no clue what I was doing in the beginning.
What makes my blog unique is that it’s a mashup of “how-to” posts and fun lifestyle content. One day I’m showing you how to organize your pantry, the next I’m giving you ideas for kid’s birthday parties, interior decorating, or family trips. Basically, it’s the internet equivalent of a junk drawer – useful, a little chaotic, but somehow always what you needed. Where I actually make money is when bigger companies like Redfin or Good Housekeeping pick up my content, or through my LTK platform (gracebeautyandfbombs), which is like the holy grail of passive income. It also makes me feel validated, like “oh wow, people really do like my style!” (And let’s be real—who doesn’t love that?).
Right now I’m deep in Halloween mode—think epic party ideas, Boo baskets, and all things spooky. Basically, if it involves fake spiderwebs and an excuse to buy candy “for the kids,” I’m working on it.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My mom definitely taught me the most about work. I followed right in her footsteps, becoming a retail manager at a young age – and let’s just say I’ve been hustling since the minute I legally could (happy 16th birthday to me, here’s a nametag). My mom has always been the hardest-working person I know. She’s respected, loved by her staff, and the kind of boss who actually walks the walk. One of her golden rules was, “don’t expect your team to do something you wouldn’t do yourself,” which I carried with me when I became a shoe store manager.
Now, full disclosure: I was terrible at delegating at first. I basically lived at my store and tried to do everything myself (classic Type A move). That’s when my husband (then boyfriend) gave me the gentle-but-firm reality check that I actually had a great team and it was okay to trust them. He’s been regulating my Type A personality ever since, and honestly, he deserves a medal for that job.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I think the only fear I’ve ever really had is letting people down. Failure itself doesn’t scare me nearly as much as the thought of disappointing the people I love. Even as a kid, I was my own harshest critic. If I didn’t get an A+, it wasn’t my parents I worried about, it was the dramatic inner monologue in my head telling me I was doomed.
The only real downside was that it made me shy at school. I would’ve sooner died than raised my hand in class, even if I knew the answer. (Honestly, I probably would’ve volunteered as tribute in The Hunger Games before volunteering an answer in math class.) The nice thing about getting older, though, is realizing that even if I totally mess something up, the people who love me aren’t going anywhere. They’ll still rally behind me, probably while also reminding me to laugh about it and not take myself so seriously.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think the biggest lie the blogger/micro-influencer world tells itself is that there isn’t room for everyone. We hear all the time that the market is saturated. There are a million blogs and Instagram accounts, so the little voice in your head says, “Why bother? It’s already been done.”
But here’s the thing. It hasn’t been done by you. No one else has your exact style, perspective, or voice (or your ability to make a Target haul feel like a full-on red carpet event). That’s what makes it special. The reality is, there’s plenty of room for all of us at the table—mostly because the internet doesn’t actually run out of chairs.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope the story people tell about me is that I loved my family more than life itself. Losing my brother at 26 taught me that we never, ever have enough time with the ones we love, and that lesson has stayed with me. So when I’m gone, I hope people say, “She loved her family with everything she had. She was a good human, a good friend, and she always knew how to push the boundaries just enough to be funny—without getting herself completely canceled.”
